Gas tank under vacuum ?

85 Toyota pu 22r. Gas purged thru can on firewall. Runs because I drilled hole in gas cap. What’s going on. Reman engine. New fuel pump

I forget, is that an in tank fuel pump? I think you mixed up the fuel lines, swapped the return and vent lines or something like that

If you are using the stock fuel pump and have a 22R, the fuel pump is bolted to the intake side of the head and driven off of the camshaft.

There should only be fuel vapor in the charcoal canister, not liquid fuel.

What you have to figure out is how liquid fuel is ending up in the charcoal canister. Is it coming from the tank? Fuel pump return line?

It is not uncommon for people to switch the fuel lines around and route them in the wrong spots.

More likely it's the gas cap not venting. The vent is prolly stuck closed & your drilling the hole in it is acting like a vent now. Replace the gas cap. Some suggestions:
