Front Steering/suspension Question.

81 Toyota pick-up 22r 4WD

I was wondering if it was stock to have a steering stabilizer on this truck attached to the tie rod bar like this? I think it looks kinda blah. If they do come with one where is the best place for it and or where did they have it?

Also i am looking to replace the tie rods and this "bar" in between them...(adjusting sleave?) what is the exact term for this long bar in the middle of the tie rod ends? As you can see in the pics its bent and i wanna replace the whole sha-bang along with the drag link. Anyone got any good website links for like a kit maybe? If not i'll just hit up a part store and get em all.

Also in the one pic its what looks to be brackets where some kind of track bar used to be? Is this part available and or whats it "called?"

Thanks for the input i'm trying to rebuild the knucles as well. The kits for those are very easy to find i just need to know about the "steering"

Thanks for any input

As this is my first solid axle first gen so yea...

best route is to do a small lift and put a hi steer on it...Its not real safe that the dog bone is gone i bet the truck dives left when you have to panic stop.

yea go histeer and eliminate all the push pull stuff. Its more stable and safer. Also when you do it i recommend getting a IFS truck steering shaft (the one from the steering wheel to the gear box its under the hood) two truck we did were loose and once the IFS steering rod was put in it emilniated the wobble

Tie Rod is clearly bent--why spend the money twice?? OEM than high Steer?
the steering difference between high steer and the crappy stock stuff is nice and day.

as far as your steering stablizer question, the stock one went in the hole just the left of where your aftermarket stablizer is..
only pic of my truck with the stock stuff on it I could find, you can see it behind the tie rod:

Ah (slaps head) that would explain the hole in da tie rod..... Ok cool. Yea i've been looking around and stuff and most ppl are saying high steer this high steer that... I mean i drove the truck and it seemed to have an "ok" steering feel to me.

I mean except at very low speeds and idle it was kinda tough... And the turn radius seemed pretty "wow"... But eh.

Like i said i was new to the solid axle and didn't know of high steer till now...

I saw a few build ups with the high steer mods.... do all "high steer" swaps require fabrication?

Also about the so called missing "track bar" thats supose to be on the axle and the frame? Whats it called and why is it not on meh truck?

Any High Steer conversion on a 79-85 requires a little bit of fabrication. YOu need to have a mounting kit to mount the IFS steering box to the frame, drill two holes and weld the mount to your frame--wabbit's pics show about the best example I have found-the ones below show what you don't want to have happen

Angle it so the holes line up on the frame in the center and then test fit your mounting plates. Tack weld and test fit again to make sure the pitman arm clears and weld out.

what you don't want to have happen when you install your high steer:

Cause you don't want this.

both my '84 and my '81 were missing the track bar when I bought them.
some people feel it really helps...if you convert to high steer you won't be able to use it(it would get in the way of the steering) so one less thing to worry about as to why yours is missing, could be any number of reasons--too short when the lift was put on..they took it off and forgot to put it back on, who knows...

old pic of my truck but you get the idea of where it place the steering.

overall it improved my steering a lot, it was about a $400 investment, but probably one of the best of have made on this hunk o'junk...
I have a steering stablizer kit I got from Deathcougar cheap but I don't seem to need it even running 35x13.50's. New components help a lot

It really is a biggest drivability mod you can do, say goodbye to white knuckles. If this truck isn't your DD you can get the parts for a good deal if you search here, pirate4x4, craigslist etc... I see these kits come up fairly often and for much cheaper than retail.
I bought hi-steer, vented rotors for an IFS brake upgrade, calipers which I ended up not using (bad condition), power steering box and 4.88s with an aussie locker installed. I got all those things at once from a member here to was scrapping his build. All in great shape and unused. It pays (or should I say saves) to be patient if you don't need this things immediately for a DD

Hmmm... Thanks alot for the posts and pictures they were very helpful and interesting. Think i might just do it later. I didn't realize till you showed me those pics thats its not as big a deal as i originaly thought.

It looks like a pretty solid mod.

And thanks for info and track bar. It seemed kinda there for a lil extra security anyway =D
