frame differences between 1983 & 1989

I know one has a SA, and the other IFS

Would it be possible to swap a cab and bed from a 1983 pickup to a 1989.

I own both trucks, but did not start measuring yet. I was just wondering if anybody has done this swap before. I should be able to do a SAS to the 1989 frame for the 83 axle, correct?

If nobody knows, I'll take measurements this weekend and post them up.

Toyota Bed Swapping

Soo..Did you swap the bed ?

I have a 1983 Toyota with very rusted and beat up old Datsun bed. Aside from being beat up, it was very very very poorly "fabricated" to get it to bolt on to the Toyota frame in the first place.

All the salvage yards around don't have any 79-83 Toyota trucks, but there are quite a few 85-89 and newer ones with decent beds on them.

Thanks - =)

well i got a 79 toy on a 84 frame and i can tell u that none of my cab mounts matched. in fact i dont have my front rad. support mounts in at all wich sucks. as for the bed i've got 6 points of eight mounted decent alignment. my 4 cab points that are in place arent in the right spot so i just drilled and used dock washers to hold my cab in place good luck with ur swap

1st gen Cab mount width eye to eye
  • Front 31.5 inches
  • Middle 47.16 inches
  • Rear 47.56 inches

2nd gen Width eye to eye
  • Front 33.07 inches
  • mid 46.3 inches
  • rear 46.3 inches

1st gen Length, eye to eye
  • Between 1st and 2nd body mount, 44.61 inches

2nd gen Length, eye to eye
  • Between 1st and 2nd body mount, 43.98 inches
  • Between 2nd and 3rd body mount, 43.78 inches
  • Overall length of cab mount front to rear, 87.76 inches total

Width Difference between 1st and 2nd gen
Relocating body mounts to fit 1st gen cab on 2nd gen frame
  • Move Front Cab mount .785 inches inward on each side.
I think that the height will be lower than the 79-83 frame if you're working with an 86-88 frame because the crossmember is 1.46 inches higher on a SFA frame, not 100% sure on that though.
  • Middle cab mounts will have to be moved .515 inches outward on both sides and .63 inches back on each side.
  • Rear cab mounts will have to be moved 4.65 inches forward, and .63 inches outward.

OLD thread!!!

Anything can be done if you can weld...there was a guy looking at a first gen truck that was on the body of some later model...can't remember but it was basically a first gen with IFS and EFI. You can throw a subaru body on an '89 frame if you want. But no, the cab mounts won't line up. Have to fab.

Ahh.

Yes I was looking for an update.

And also not about the cab mounts, rather the bed mounts from a 1989 bed to a 1983 frame.

I can't find a 1979-1983 bed to replace the bed on my 1983 pickup. But I found some year toyota bed that worked. The body lines don't match up, but it bolted down ok.

Thanks.

I forgot how much I loved forums *le sigh =)
