The original was called either the bruiser or mountaineer. It was very detailed.
the re-released one is called the high-lift hilux (they also make an 08 tundra and an 03 superduty) and it is not nearly as detailed as the original but it does have the 3 speed tranny.
I'm trying to justify buying one

 

yep, I know about the newer releases, the older ones just have a lot more detail to them...$5K was just a bit much IMO...

I have been building RC cars for nearly 10 years. I do crawler competitions and am nationally sponsored by Team Sinister and Team Pantherl.

Tamiya has that yota body but the frame and axles you can buy independently or custom build them yourselves. There is even a few website that sales scale yota axles to make the truck truly look real.

The fella driving above is Ryan Dunn, AKA Gatekeeper. He's considered teh GOD of crawlers.
Think of him as the Vin Diesel of RC Crawlers. Companies want him to wear and use their stuff,
he's got so many sponsors it's ridiculous, and he even builds and develops his own custom crawler
chassis. I have been in 1 competition with him, He blew everyone away by over 70 points.. I came
in 4th and he got 1st. I did finally get his autograph tho.

There is a local wheeler that also runs an RC shop out of his house, been thinking about an Axial kit. Just have to finish my '81 first and than maybe with my tax refund I can pick up an RC and have another addiction(all legal ) to drive my wife nuts with

 

The Axial is the best starter you can buy. It will amaze you at the things it can crawl, plus there a TONS of upgrades for them. You have 3 options from them.

KIT: No controller, no batteries, no motors. You hand build all of it.

ATR: 90% put together, comes with motor and electronics, no batteries, no controller

RTR: Ready to run, buy some batteries, and charge them up and CRAWL

You will also need a charger.

You can get a fully running AXial with controller and all around 500 bucks.

I have been thinking about selling one of my competition rigs if you are interested. I have nearly 1500 bucks in it and various spare parts and remote.
It's ready to run, had high end brain and electronics, charger and 2 sets of batteries. Front and rear lockers, Dig unit, FULLY CUSTOM, i made 90% of this rig by hand.

Prolly sell it for 500 or 600.

 

Anyone seen the Traxxas Summit yet? Its a pretty sweet truck. And you won't have ANY trouble finding parts since its Traxxas and shares the same chassis as the Revo http://www.traxxas.com/products/elec...summit5610.htm

 

Yeah, I've seen it. I have a couple Traxxas nitro trucks. 2 T-MAXX's and 1 Stampede, plus I have a Traxxas Blast boat. I will tell you the best thing about Traxxas RC's. There are plenty of parts.

Which is good because these things break a ton. If you want something fast and fun and that can really take a beating get yourself a HPI SAVAGE.

The savage is by far the STRONGEST RC truck you can buy. The tmaxx is the 2nd best. The problem with the Tmaxx is the front end collisions, it just cannot handle them and you will snap controls arms, bend axles, crack the frame plate and bust bulkheads all day long. With a savage it's just not going to happen. The thing is truly a beast. Trust me I been playing with these things for years.

Now.. their new crawler.. It's the independent front suspension, lack of articulation and ..plastic. It's not a true crawler, it's more of a midrange crawler, it's EXTREMELY top heavy too. Consider it a cross between a "basher" and a crawler.

My choices for RC's:

Crawler: Axial Scorpion
Basher: HPI Savage
SPEED: Traxxas REVO 3.3

I started with speed nitro when I was younger. I loved it, but hills and jumps can destroy them. Then I got a basher and was stuck on them for years, very happy. You have a rc car that runs 30-50 MPH and can take massive damage and make some monster jumps. Then there is crawling.. it's sooo slow but it's SOOO fun to see what you can climb. I have been into crawlers for the past 3 years and hardly ever touch my boats, or other nitro's.

Learning to land them on all 4 wheels takes some skill, trust me. You will be amazed at the difference a little braking can do when you have a rc car 20+ feet up in the air.

Here's your summit. I'll admit it looks neat.. but i'm already to thinking of a way of ripping the diffs of, the servos and modding them so I can have them on mine.. Too bad i would have to buy a whole truck just for that.

You shouldn't have to. I'm sure Traxxas will sell replacement parts for them as soon as they hit the market.

The thing I like about the Summit is the 2 speed tranny, I can get to the rocks fast, then crawl. And the chooseable locking differentials. Oh, and the LED's hehe . Especially since they're incorporated into the bumper so you don't have to worry about wires and such when you take the body off.

Wow, buggy leaves and all! There are lots of videos of "trail runs" on you tube. looks pretty fun for the winter months when you don't have a heated shop, but still want to work on a "Toyota."
