Engine upgrade
Rather than a swap or upgrades for my 22r I'm gonna order the "superstock" later model 22re from oregon engine rebuilders and get all the other efi stuff. Do I need to change transmissions or will the L52 bolt up to the newer style 22r and are the motor mounts the same? If I do need to change will a G52 transmission work with my transfer case and crossmember?

Pretty sure any 22R/E will bolt up to our transimissions. IF you go with a new transmission, I've heard a couple things...the most common thing I've heard is that you need to get a new crossmember, lengthen front driveshaft, shorten rear driveshaft, cut into the floorboards a bit since the longer tranny/t-case has the shifters a little farther back. And the t-cases are different, so I'm thinking you'd need to correct tranny/t-case combo.

I guess that's debatable...if you're ok with some more mods, the later model transmissions are supposed to be a lot stronger. The L50 and L52 5 speeds were weaker than all the following 5 speeds. So..depending on what you want to do, it's really not so bad to make a later model tranny fit.
I decided to get a rebuilt L52HD from Marlin which has a stronger gear set in it than the regular L52, but it cost me...
Would have probably been cheaper, and debatably better, to find a good used or rebuilt later model tranny and do the mods, but who knows. If you can do the stuff yourself and can be patient or have good connections to get a good later model tranny, it would probably end up being a good amount cheaper than an L52HD, but then again your transmission may be fine, so it just depends. You could always wait until your tranny goes out, and make the decision then, unless you've got a line on a good newer tranny right now.
I'd search some of the "swap" sections of this site, marlin crawler, and pirate to make sure I'm not totally full of it. I'm just repeating what I've heard, I haven't seen myself if they fit and what it takes to make things fit, I've just read a lot about it. As far as I know, any 22R/E will bolt up to any transmission that came with a 22R/E, but I'm not positive, so..
I also had a guy tell me that a G52 will bolt up and fit with no mods other than flipping the x-member 180*. So...I don't know. Maybe it's the W56 that requires mods? You should do some searching.

I'll swap in the newer motor and wait untill my tranny goes. If I was going to do a trans swap I was gonna buy the mc one anyways so eventually I will.

Should be a nice motor. But depending on how the tranny has been kept it might die pretty quickly. It is the front input bearing that goes on these trannys. Had to replace mine twice in my 82. Once because it was worn out and once because I took the truck swimming. But I rebuilt the complete transmission with parts from MC. Still works well just decided to upgrade to a different truck. If it is working fine then use it till it dies but it will die.
