need help with smog - running rich?

Alright, I need some help on this one. I have an 82 4x4, 22r, 114k miles that failed CA emissions twice. After the first fail, I changed plugs, wires, fuel filter, front o2 sensor, checked the rotor and cap, checked timing, and ran seafoam through vacuum line and tank. it still failed!

readouts say I failed due to CO2, first test was 1.73 at 25 miles per hour (1.38 max) and the second test was 1.62 at 15mph (max 1.58). So now I'm waiting on a rear o2 sensor, and I really don't know what else to do.

I did some research and apparently high co2 is due to too much fuel in combustion chamber, meaning its running too rich. (correct?) maybe i need to check the gap on my plugs? I'm currently using NGK iridiums. also the PO had put a new exhaust on it just before selling it, I don't know the brand, but he said its off the turbo model so it has a high flow cat. (It is very nice and rumbly) Could that be my problem? And the only other thing I can think of is the old plugs had a lot of buildup on them when I changed them (actually stripped one of them lol) so maybe I just have a bunch of buildup in my engine. More seafoam possibly.

Also I am on a tight budget and just want to pass smog, lol. That $82 the second time around is a killer! Thanks in advance guys.

Make sure your timming is set right, and maybe back it off just a little bit more and then check that your plugs are gapped to spec, then adjust your carb as lean as you can and try that.

You can also go to marlin crawlers forums and look under engine/drivetrain forum, there is a big thread there dedicated to how to pass smog. it would probably help you alot also.

can you post up the other gas readings and limits? that would give a bit more information than just the CO2 readings. BTW are you sure you don't mean CO is too high?

-CO2 is a measure of engine efficiency, the higher you can get it the better, "ideal" combustion produces CO2 and water vapor
-O2 is a lean indicator, also goes high with a misfire (unused oxygen)
-CO is a rich indicator, too much fuel / not enough air
-NOx indicate high combustion temperature (>2500 F), a lean mix burns hot, poor cooling, high compression from carbon deposits, ignition timing

it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to run some kind of cleaner through the carb and fuel system - pull off the air cleaner and spray carb cleaner through all the little passages you can get to - make sure all the carb linkages move freely / spray lube linkage bushings as necessary

lol youre right its CO. heres the numbers:
First test (before tune up)
HC
15mph; max 218, meas 149
25mph; max 132, meas 124
CO
15mph; max 1.58, meas 1.58
25mph; max 1.38, meas 1.73 *FAIL*
NO
15mph; max 1523, meas 593
25mph; max 1383, meas 210

so i did plugs, O2 sensor, pcv, cap and rotor looks good, i know its got a new cat on it, fuel filter and pump (pump was leaking lol thank god i didnt die) ran a seafoam treatment (not on oil tho [oh and i did it on old plugs/O2 sensor of course]) and took her back after a tankfull to let it get used to having plugs that actually work lol. Here's the readings:

HC
15mph; max 218, meas 117
25mph; max 132, meas 19 (w00t)
CO
15mph; max 1.58, meas 1.62 *FAIL*
25mph; max 1.38, meas 0.06 (confusing)
NO
15mph; max 1523, meas 277
25mph; max 1383, meas 67 (w00t again beezies)

Wow I didn't even notice the 25mph CO reading. The truck did sit around wating to get tested, I'm thinking that I really do have a choke problem (just noticed today it might not be working) so if it sat and got all cold in the cat, and he started it up and the choke was not working properly until the 25mph test thats why it failed.

And if you can't tell already I'm new to carbs! I also need to check my float level i think... Maybe the fuel pump being broken threw some stuff out of whack?

ALSO noticed that I have a throttle position sensor on my 82, when the Haynes chart only shows it for the 81 CA RN 4x4. It does not have a vacuum line on it, and there is no appropriate VSV to plug in a vacuum line. I know PO put a new carb on it, maybe it was the wrong year or something? I need to call that shiester up tomorrow and find out what he did to this beautiful truck.

Oh and again I can't thank you guys enough, being broke and trying to pass CA smog sucks! Good thing I don't qualify for assistance because I'm smogging it to get the registration (NEVER buy a car "AS IS" unless you can afford to!)

go to the downey off-road site and read about the air fuel mixture adj. to the mass air-flow sensor... thats how I passed...dont be afraid to pop the black top off the sensor. and use black rtv to seal it back as soon as possible...
check it out
