Custom clutch setup for engine swap.

Hi All,

I need your expertise to answer a clutch question for me because I am new to Toyota trucks. I'm bolting a R151F to a small diesel in a '79 4x4 mini truck. In order to do this I will need a custom adapter and flywheel. I'll be using the bellhousing from a 3.0l toyota v6, R150 application. That bellhousing matches the length of the input shaft of the R151F and the R150 and R151 share the same bolt pattern for bolting to the bellhosuing. The R151F uses a 1.125" dia., 21 spline input shaft like the R150 trans.

I need to know what the biggest clutch disc I can fit in the 3.0l bell housing is. 250mm (9.94"). 254mm (10"), 266mm (10.47"). I can machine the flywheel to accept any of these as long as the clutch/flywheel combo will fit inside the 3.0l bellhousing. As I understand it the only difference between the 3.0l and 3.4l bell housings is depth to accommodate the longer input shaft of the later R150 trans so, later clutch packages may work.

I may have all of this screwed up. If so, please straighten me out.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Slacker. I notice you run twin turbos. What is your torque output? Do you have problems with the clutch handling that much torque? Are you running a stock clutch or aftermarket?

My setup will be producing approx. 300-350 lb ft of torque at 1600 RPM.

don't know the torque #'s yet , as I'm still building that one .
I used a "stage 2" high performance grip force clutch from ebay .. actually , I was a distributor for a while , so I bought direct . until my fiberglass end of my business got VERY busy . I don't do the engine swaps and clutch replacements I use to , so I ended up dropping the line , cus no one was buying clutches from me anymore .
I used these for quite a few years , including 3 on my personal units . stock replacements , stage 2 and I have a stage 3 racing clutch for my 600HP 2WD .. never had an issue ..
stage 2 in my supercharged 3.4L Trekker .. 5 years , and doin' fine .

Good to know. I'll check them out. From my old hot rod/drag racing days I was a fan of Center Force products. Haven't done this kind of thing in years so I don't know if they still make good parts. I've been looking at Marlin Crawler clutch kits. Kit includes disc, pressure plate, throw-out brg, pilot brg and alignment tool. $309.
