Cursed Ignition

Hey guys. l was on my way to Pick 'n' Pull today to get me some Chevy 63s for my 83. But halfway there my 22R died exactly as if l turned the ignition off while l was driving. l popped the hood expecting the ignition coil to have popped off but everything was in normal place. There was absolutely NO spark, l tested the distributor and the coil, NOTHING but dead. l called my friend to bring me a new coil, distributer cap assembly. l installed everything but it was the same as before. l've gone through much as l can but have no luck of any spark or even current. The ground's set right and everything's the same as before. You guys have any idea what the problem could be? l spent all day trying to fix my truck on the side of the freeway and had to finally tow it back home. The only thing l can think that'll fix it is replacing the whole wiring.

Does it crank, but not turn over? When this happened to me, it was the ignition module. Pricey little thing...

If it is the ignition module there is a cheaper way to go than shelling out big bucks for a Toyota module.

Yes the motor cranks over and all the gages work but there's no ignition what so ever.

Thanks! l like that idea a lot and will probably do that. lf all else fails l'll just have to buy a new stock one.

Test it out first, if you can. They really are about $300...no need to spend that if it's not your problem. Probably is, though...

Did you check to see if you have power from the ignition switch or if your wire / connector is bad at the ignition module. Our trucks are old and the wiring gets brittle and breaks easy especially on tilt steering wheel models.

l still have no spark guys. l did the GM swap and followed at least a dozen articles on how to do it. lt just has no spark what so ever. l replaced all the parts twice too and still nothing. l'm guessing this is the last option l have which doesn't depend on any ignitors or coils.

Did you read the thread?

There is also something, which I can't remember, in the distributer which can go out and cause the same issues. Not the cap, but in the distributer itself...but I won't advise you to do what I did...which was instead of testing things to see what the issue was, I just replaced things till I finally got the right one. I replaced the coil, the distributer, and finally the ignitor. If I had just tested everything, I would have only had to replace one of those.

Beyond the stuff you've already tried, I don't know what to do...

I'd find out exactly what's wrong before spending another $300+ on something that might not even fix your problem...

Yes l did, it was the pick-up wire (A cord that contains two wires that come out of the distributor to the ignition module.) The medal plates weren't close enough to each other to stimulate the timing. The original one was bad and l had to adjust the replacement one. The truck runs great off the Chevy conversion now.
