"Cold natured" 20R??
Hey guys, My 20R has 71,000 original miles on it and runs great for the most part.....However, on cold starts it cranks fine but i have to just barely give it some gas to keep it idling. If i let off it will run kinda rough a the rpms will fluctuate ~200-300 rpms until it warms up. After it gets up to operating temp, it idles fine with no issues. I am thinking it is a choke issue, so i took off the air cleaner to look inside the throat while it was running....The butterfly was opened up all the way and was very "loose", i could move it with my finger. if i turn the engine off it stays opened up by itself also, basically it feels like something in the choke is broke? or is it supposed to be like this?
Thanks,
Stephen

your assessment is most likely correct, engine is getting too much air when cold because the choke isn't closing. Does it seem the carb is jumping on the high idle cam and the choke plate is broke or is it also not engaging on the high idle cam as well? You might need to play with the choke thermostat if it's not engaging the high idle cam.

close the choke plate with your hand and turn the throttle you might hear a little click or the throttle will not return back to where it started. You can also see the steps on the throttle linkage on the carb side as well. I am not sure on the 20r carb but there should be 2 - 3 steps and it should hit the last or 2nd to last highest step with the choke engaged.
