Clutch or cylinder problem

I have a 1980 Toyota 4x4 with a 81 5 speed tranny swapped it in about a month ago drove fine fine about a week but now it feels like its slipping but it has a brand new clutch and I notice under the dash there is brake fluid that is leaking could that be the problem?

Well, it's certainly A problem. Whether or not it's the problem is hard to say through the internet...

Under the dash? So inside the truck?

Sounds to me like your clutch master has a leak around the seal on the piston. The master and slave cylinders for our clutches are very cheap and readily available at most any parts store. If you have a vacuum pump bleeding the clutch is super easy. I recommend replacing both units at the same time. You may also want to replace the hose going from the steel line to the slave cylinder. Relatively short and painless procedure.

Slave is only 20$ at autozone, 2 bolts, 1 spring, 1 threaded rod, and one metal feed line. But as stated before, your issue seems to be the master. I'd do them both while your at it.

How much do you know the master will be?

You have a leaking clutch master cylinder. Mine did the same thing about a year ago (after 28 years) and I replaced it-no problem since. Suggestion: While you are at it I suggest you replace the hose and slave cylinder. Use a slave cylinder from a 1979 truck because it has an adjustable shaft and is spring loaded which makes it easier to properly adjust your clutch.

I do not know, I only buy from Toyota because of the many problems I hear people have with aftermarket replacement parts.

I just replaced my master and slave with Aison stuff. The first (new master) I ordered was bad out of the box. I spent forever trying to diagnose the problem. Talk about some cussing in the garage. Anyway mine were leaking and led to a spongy feeling clutch. I would do both and test them before installing them for piece of mind. It is just too easy of a job not to. Then if you still have slippage, you know that the trouble is in the clutch or flywheel itself.

I'd get in the habit of checking the date of the last post on old threads!

Well, you never know! Unfortunately, most people who post with a problem don't come back and let us know what happened. Which, when you go searching for threads about a problem you've been having, doesn't help so much.

You see all this advice...but did it fix the problem??? We'll never know, because they never came back & told us.
