cigarette ligher + power

Do your trucks work with cigaretter lighter plug in assories? I would like to use an ipod tuner in my truck and last time I checked, my cigarette lighter didn't seem to power the device... but the lighter itself works (last I checked). Was that device I tryed bad, is there something wierd with our trucks, or something wierd with my wirering?

Mine just plain doesn't work, so I can't help. I'm planning on just buying a new one that'll fit that spot and probably wiring it right to the battery so it gets power even when the truck's off. Maybe put a fuseable link in there somewhere...

Maybe it's just weak? Weak connection or something so it's enough to heat the lighter but not power something that takes more juice? I need to get an ipod setup in mine, too.

My '85 lighter works fine with 12 volt adapters. Might see if yours is dirty or oxidized inside. Also, check the fusible link behind the socket if there is no power. Mine melted on me after running a 12 volt cooler for a while. Only 4 amps draw but it was the on-time that took out the link. I re-powered my socket to a constant 12 volt wire to the battery so it is live all the time.

Mine had really questionable wiring at the back of the 12v plug so I went to radio shack and bought a new socket for 7 bucks and put it in. With the one I got, I just had to trim the plastic surround and then it fit perfectly, looks factory.

I think your write-up on that is what made me think of it, 4Crawler.

I have the same problem, my lighter works but my Zune turner doesn't. I was going to try and clean the contacts and see if that works. Other than that, it's just plain weird that the lighter works but others things do not.

Just a thought, but some adapters have an adjustable tip that screws in and out so it will fit the socket properly. Don't know if this is true of yours.
