I dont drive the 83 much but make it a hbit to crank it every 2 weeks and take it down the drive way, That being said about a year ago the alternator crapped out, so i changed it, The battery lite was still on after the change, Called my mechanic buddy and he said keep a eye on it but there could be something in the alternator thats bad that makes the lite come on?

Its cranked and ran fine since the swap a year ago, last week i went to crank it and the battery was dead? Jumped it off and it did fine cranking afterwords, Wanting to run it a little I decided to take it to work= a 30 mile run, It ran fine half way there then the lights started dimming out and i costed into a gas station.

Battery dead and the yellow wire that runs to the battery on the positive side was melted?

 

Hmm? Could it of been over charging? thats what burnt the yellow wire? What is the Yellow wire?

 

yep .. sounds like the regulator to me .
could also be a faulty "wire" from before ? so I would replace the fuse wire check voltage from alt , and go from there

so the yellow wire at the battery runs to the alternater and will need to be replaced?
