I'm in the process of restoring an 82 4x4 and will be ditching the stock carb and getting rid of the smog stuff and was wondering if the weber 32/36 or weber 38 would be the best to go with

 

More or less this is what I was looking into, however as I said the non-smog carb isn't the nightmare the smog ones are. The 32/36 is supposed to be a direct replacement for it. Some retail suppliers claim fantastic HP gains which you can take with a grain of salt. I have no experience with the 38 but if the rig in your picture is the one you're doing I'd say you need as much get up and go you can get out of a 22R so I'd stick with the 32/36 for better low end.

You could try DCOE's (sidedrafts). I had them on a 78 Celica and it went like a bat out of_ _ _ _! Mustangs and Camaros in my rear-view mirror! Most difficult to tune and set-up and they may not be a good choice on a lifted truck with big rubber.

I can say un-disputably that the Offy dual plane manifold has improved low end power and overall drivability at the cost of top end.

You may be able to tune the 32/36 for more top end...if you can I'd like to know. Again that's what I was looking into.

 

Actually the one in my picture is my off road project, it's a 350sbc swap, the one I'm referring too is gonna basically be restored to basically stock condition and ill mainly just drive it on weekends so I'm not looking for crazy horsepower or anything, just something fun to get out and drive, and I've got it tagged as an antique in TN so I definitely wanna go the no smog route since I don't have to worry about emissions testing with the antique tags

 

I put a Weber 38 on my 1980 20R along with a header and a desmog. I am very happy with it.

 

Was it basically a direct swap like the 32/36 is supposed to be?

 

It has been several years ago, but I think there was an adapter between the intake manifold and the carb, other than that, it was direct replacement. I got everything from J T Outfitters. They sent an air filter too. I don't think the Weber would work with the OEM air filter.

 

Are you sticking with the stock intake manifold? I went with a Weber 38 and an Offenhauser intake on my '82 22R.

 

I'm most likely going to go with LCEperformance carb/intake set, I believe it has the Offenhauser intake in the setup. All I'm really planning on mod wise is intake, carb and header
