I have found a 1981 Toyota, which, according to the VIN number, is a "Deluxe Long Bed 4WD". The owner said that I could have it for free, but, as you can see from the pictures, there is a damage on the cabin caused by a fallen tree. As best as I could determine, the passenger-side door, the entire front - fenders, hood, firewall, as well as the inside of the cabin are not damaged. It appears to me that the cabin can be removed by unbolting the fenders and 4 screws from the frame.
I will do search, but it would be beneficial if anyone could help with the following questions:
1. Is my understanding that the cabin can be (relatively easily) replaced correct?
2. Is there a detailed description how to do it?
3. Where should I look for a replacement cabin? I am in the Escondido, CA area.
4. Which years of Toyota's should I look at?
its a lot more than just 4 bolts there are bolts at the front of the frame.. you have all the stuff under the hood (radiator, fuel lines, wiring etc that have to be disconnected) definitely doable
no write up that I am aware
any from 79-83 would work but some connectors changed in 82 so your best bet would be to transfer the wiring harness over
thank you for the information regarding which cabins will fit. I will start looking. Yes, it does have a title, and it was running about two years ago.
in addition to the questions, any idea is there is any place specializing in Toyotas or sheet metal parts? I have called all the junkyards around, but nobody has any in the years suggested.
That was a cool looking truck before it wasn't!
I fully understand wanting to revive it. Especially considering you have nothing in it at this point.
Fellow member Slacker owns toyotafiberglass.com and Precision 4x4 Center out of British Columbia. I think that he's developing a fiberglass cab but I'm not sure he's producing them yet. Perhaps he'll be able to chime in.
Short of finding a solid cab on a parts truck, you could probably part that one out and nearly afford one that is not crushed.
Apologies for butting in here Mefizto, but I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE for a descent fuel tank for my 81 long bed dlx 4x4. If you do part it, I’d love first crack at the gas tank and some of the interior pieces (rear view mirror w/light, window lock, gas pedal). Where are you? Just message me if interested. Agreed, that was an awesome looking truck in its days.
Thanks a bunch!
