Bearing #3 relpacement

My #3 bearing spun and overlapped and my crankshaft needs to be turned. I have read that this is a common problem on 22r motors without oil mods.

What are some mods or preventative maintenance I should do while I have the motor out?

here is the progress so far.

slow going but getting it done myself makes me feel great and saves me money.

Removed hood, disconnected all lines wires and hoses, drained radiator. All ready for engine to be pulled.

Few hours later...

Engine is out. Calling it a night...

Next day engine is on its stand.

#3 cap removed to show the damage.

Close up of the damage.

Gutted...

Gutted...

Gutted...

Looking good so far!

Well, the bearing doesn't look good, but your progress does.

Spun bearing really is not a common problem on a 22r. Could be from lack of oil in engine at some point. Or maybe a 1 time blown head gasket and rusted the crank a bit and started scorching the bearing a long time ago. Common issues are worn timing sets, and cooling system passages being eaten away by electrolysis.

I would source a new or low mile used crank. Usually 300 for a new crank. LC Engineering has really good rebuild kits. Even their economy kit is very dent. You could upgrade to a turbo oil pump from a 86/87 22rte truck. you will get a few more psi at idle and top of the rpm range. But since these engines do not have hydraulic lifters to pump up, they really do not require much oil pressure.

Maybe run better oil filters as well. I used to make it a habit to go the Toyota dealer, and buy a few oil filters at a time to keep on the shelf.
