Anyone heard of an '83 Mirage?

Hey there...

I'm rebuilding an 1983 Toyota Hilux, with the "Mirage" package.

Has anyone heard of a Mirage package?
I live in Canada, maybe it was a Canadian exclusive? Dealer exclusive?
Does anyone have any pictures of said truck?

The truck I have was very rough and missing many many of the decals. So I am not a 100% sure of what and where the decals are/go?

I already have found the James Dean cr... site. There is nothing applicable...

Any help would be very much appreciative.

Thanks...

"Mojave", yes. "Mirage", no. Maybe that's what they called it in Canada? Maybe it's something else altogether?

The SR5.com article mentioned at the end of the vid.

2WD "Mojave" Edition Long Bed

2WD "Mojave" Edition Short Bed

4WD "Mojave" Edition Short bed

The Mirage is one of the camper conversions is it not? But not sure if they made em that early.

Yup yup they did: this is an 82: http://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota...check-out.html

Thanks guys!

I knew it was limited, however I never knew it was that limited. If I knew that I would never have riped it apart and rebuilded it as much as I have! LOL!

Thanks again guys!

Oh...it's black I see(I so wanna jack that pic of yours slacker and post it here...but it's yours...so I won't do it while you're looking).

Well that rules out my "maybe it's a Canadian Mojave Edition" theory. Black with silver stripes doesn't really fit the whole "American Southwest/Mojave Desert" motif very well, does it? And, BTW, what exactly would be the motif that the "Mirage" was hoping to achieve there?

Hey...

The only colour that it came in was "charcoal grey". It had strips that graduated from sliver to grey and mirage in large letters at the bottom of the doors. From what I understand it was an alternative to the Mojave (which was available in Canada as well).

Not sure what they were trying to "achieve" with it, just know that it looks very cool!

Since he's got his head turned...

Oh yes I did!

EDIT: Were there 2WD and 4WD Mirages too that you know of? Just curious as to that and, if so, if they were as different as the 2WD and 4WD Mojaves stylistically speaking.

had you not looked at the above pics I posted? That don't look grey to me. And that aint no pickup like the mojave's.

I got to assume based on the last of the O.P.'s posts that his in fact the camper.

EDIT: Mudhippy and slacker, was that above posted pic originally a camper do you know or it that a completely different "Mirage"? Now I am confused. lol

I hate it when websites try and make it difficult for me to steal their pics...

Touché!

Ahh...that was fun while it lasted. But, alas, I do believe I've had enough fun here and must be moving along to another thread.

So...carry on as you were then...

kricket, I know this is really, really late.... but this is my Dad's 1983 Mirage 4x4 SR5. It has always been garaged, is all original, and I can send more pics if you like.

Mirage

Hey there brother!
Thanks for the pic! and YES! PLEASE can you give me a few pictures of the decals. Sides and bonnet would be perfect. You came at the perfect time, I just got my "Mirage" back from the body shop. It's been quite difficult finding a "original" sample, so I can get the decals positioned correctly. Not many of these units still hanging around. You fathers looks almost brand new! I quite jealous! LOL! NOt like mine is anywhere near "original" conditions, many mods here, lol.....
Where do you dwell (live)?
This is so cool I kind of lost hope to ever find a sirvivior.
Thanks muchly! I look forward to further conversations.

Just in case a translation is needed for our NA members "bonnet" means "Hood" lol

kricket, I have uploaded some pics for you at this link:

Google pics

Hope this helps!

My Dad got the truck new and drove it up into his mid-80s. He had a lifetime of boring cars and I guess he wanted something different, and it sure is different. My brother owns it now and it still turns heads when people see it around town. I drove it a couple of weeks ago when I took these pics and yeah - people stare! In a good way.

It's in Virginia.

Everything on it is original, no mods. The tach/odometer panel had to be replaced but that's the only equipment replacement I know of. The acceleration is weak and it makes a lot of noise / vibration over about 45 MPH so we need to probably get the transmission looked at? We will keep fixing it but... no plans for any mods or any serious off-road.

Check out Slacker's links, he has a YouTube video of the 1983 commercial for the Mirage. Very cool.

My 1983 Toyota Mirage

Been searching on Craigslist, Facebook market, and forums for almost a year now. Then just about a week ago my girlfriend found this 1983 Toyota Mirage with the 20R 4 cylinder. Really wanted the 22R but went & checked it out and only has 65k on motor 127k on body! Runs and drives amazing despite the fact it been sitting for 5 years. So I traded my 2006 Toyota Tacoma, regular cab, 5 speed, 2.7 four cylinder, with over 200k! First things first put a new battery, starter, recharged the A/C, and got an appointment for new exhaust and muffler then next are the tires. But I’ve seen plenty of sun raders and dolphins, ect.. Never seen a Mirage. It’s a fiber glass shell if I’m not mistaken. So super light weight and I filled June bug up with 35$ of premium gas!! Getting 16mpg!?

Nothing wrong with the 20R! I was really happy with mine.

No need for premium gas in that thing.

My Chinook got 20mpg on the highway, unloaded. They're pretty impressive little campers. Make sure those rear wheel bearings and axles are in good shape.
