86 alternator

So I put an 86 long block in my 83.
The 86 has an alternator on it. The connectors are different. Can I rig it up some way to make it work?

Nope. Different amperage output and different voltage regulators. The 83 alternator will mound to the 86 long block, but you need the alternator that matches your 83 wiring. Either switch over to a GM 1 wire or Check out AutoZone - they sell the 83 alternator dirt cheap. Just make sure you get the alternator with the appropriate plug and you typically replace the voltage regulator as well when you replace the alternator.

84 and older trucks have an external Voltage Regulator which is a black box located under the hood. 85 and newer as I know it has the Regulator built into the alternator. The plugs are different from one generation to the next.

If you really want to you could upgrade to the newer alternator .

It would entail sitting down with the charging system diagrams from both systems .

I had done this with my83 Celica years ago

Making what ever harness changes are needed .Which at this time might be above your skill level

At this point most likely just easier to go with your original alternator
