I guess the easiest way to explain it is make sure that everything that should be covered has a cover on it. Even if it is a small thing everything needs to have its "lid" so dirt and junk does not get in there. That way if you do take it to a shop they cannot try to say you got junk in something else and try to charge you hundreds or even thousands of dollars for something that does not need to be fixed. I know there tricks becuase I used to work in a auto shop. Just make sure everything that should be covered is covered.

I got the rocker arm assembly off the head today. Also took the cam out and found that the middle bearing cap and the cam are in very bad shape. Looks like the surfaces are gouged out in grooves and just look horrible. I don't know what would cause that to happen...maybe overheating.

I am still looking for a good machine shop in the area to send my block and possibly my head but I think I should just replace the head with an engnbuilder pre-assembled unit. The exhaust valves on 3 and 4 feel rusted half open half shut and weren't budging when I pushed down on them.

I have to admit it was cool to find some carnage.

Ill see if I can post some pics tomorrow...

Thanks
Chris Stokes

The Head looks to be in good shape I'd have it magnafluxed just in case. Best thing to do is have the head checked over well clean those sealing surfaces and get a new gasket. If your not getting oil to parts of your engine that's bad, means clog somewhere or bad oil pump.

Yeah, I assume the cam was starving for oil for it to be mangled like it is. Also got the crank out today and it looks like the oil galley in the crank is full of hardened oil. I think this truck was well taken care of until recently and then someone just stopped changing the oil.

about to get tanked

I haven't been doing well at the whole picture thing so I don't have anything to show you. I apologize for that. I will take some more pictures soon. Tomorrow morning I take everything to the shop to get vatted. Only problem is I could only get 1 of the oil galley plugs out of the crank. The other three are not coming out. All my "local" advice tells me to send it to the shop the way it is. I risk messing up the crank if I try to extract those plugs and there are other holes open to the chemicals so it should come clean just fine. Just need to blow the passages out and make sure that it is clean.

I found a local operation that claims they can fix my mangled head by line boring it where the cam destroyed it. http://www.doverheads.com/ Price quoted was $230 to line bore and rebuild my head.

I have also decided to reuse my stock pistons. The cylinder bores look good so there is no reason to bore. So why buy new pistons? I will re-ring the stockers and put them back in. They also get taken to be cleaned tomorrow.

So I need rings, bearings, gaskets, camshaft, timing set, oil pump, fuel pump (I think to be safe?) Does EngneBuilder have a kit for that? LOL I dont see that package on his site.

Also question about the rocker arm assembly.... Can I send that to the shop to get vatted? Do I need to take it apart somehow? I need to look that up in the FSM. Are there serviceable parts to the rocker arm assembly I can replace? Like the end that pushes down on the springs. Those look worn on my rocker arms.

Thumbs up

Forgot to mention earlier... I got all the old carpet pulled out. Man what a mess. There was an inch of dirt and gunk under there. I found so much crap including shotgun shells, an adjustable wrench and some money. LOL ...also found an ant infestation. I was glad to find that although the floor pans were disgustingly dirty and looked like they had been constantly damp for several years there was no rust. The paint was failing but no rust has developed.

I love this truck!

It was a good day and I have been celebrating with a few of these.

Stokesdead, you were asking about finding a good shop around your area, Get to know your local parts store guy(orielly, autozone, napa), I like orielly in one town and autozone in another town. But these guys deal with shops all the time and they will tell you the best ones. Once a week I am in there at least, even if it is for a nut or bolt for the house. You will eventually be using a shop for one thing or another, and they will save you a ton of grief of dealing with a bad shop. Congrats on your find and glad to see you turning wrenches on your truck. When you get it running, that is where the payoff is.

Ouch! That sucks. Time to find a used block...Look around for a bad engine. A lot of times people will pretty much give them away, just to get rid of them.

Those piston tops probably wouldn't be so clean on a truck as old as yours unless they've been "steam cleaned" by burning coolant, so headgasket or not, you did the right thing pulling everying and rebuilding.

I think I would drop a 3RZ in it way before I would buy a $4K 22re. Just my opinion. I know Im a newb but I think a 3rz would be really cool in this 82. I will probably end up buying a used 22r and dropping it in to save some $$$ though.

OK... I acquired an engine out of an 85. Quick question... The intake manifold on the new (85) motor has what I believe to be called a CMH connector coming off of it from the bottom. Its a black wire with a green one plug connector on the end. What do I need to do with this CMH connector? Trying to tie up all the loose ends on getting this motor installed and that one connector has got me stumped. Any suggestion or knowledge from you guys? Where should I plug it? Or is it safe to just leave it unplugged and inoperable?

Thanks,
Chris Stokes
