Hello All, I was wondering if y'all could provide me with some advice. I recently got an 82 4x4 single cab, long bed, straight axels. The 22r motor in it is toast and we were planning on just replacing it with a rebuilt 22r.( advise on where to get one).We are also going to try to get rid of all the maze of vacuum lines.
I am currently going threw the interior and had a question about the instrument cluster, the current on does not have a tach and I have found some with a tach for an 82 but do not know if it will work.
Also the dash pad is horrible, does anyone know where to find one, or a way to repaid the one I have.
Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

 

You should rebuild it yourself. Not only will you save plenty of money but it's terribly easy. If you don't have a clue how, there's a dvd for sale on ebay for like $20 that shows step by step how to rebuild. If you don't want to there's lots of places also on ebay where you can order a remanufactured one, but you may need to send them your core which could be a pain in the ass. As far as the vacuum lines go, you can lose a ton of them by changing to a Weber carb. The instrument cluster should be a direct fit being that they are both from the same year. You can find a dash cover on ebay for like $80 I think. You can usually find lots of good things for your first gen truck on ebay or you can look at a junk yard but usually there aren't too many 1st gens around. Good luck and keep us posted!

 

We were going to rebuild but after we got it apart we found that one of the rods was broke and scared the block pretty good. So just have to suck it up and get a new motor but hey that is ok.
We did not know how the insturment cluster with the tach would plug into what was already there.

If it's like my 83, you'll need to move a bunch of wires around to make it work. The SR5 cluster (with tach) has more than just a tach, so a lot is different between it and the non-SR5.

I did a write up on it, but I'll bet some things changed between 82 and 83. It should get you started, though. Then you just need to run a single wire from the correct location in the plug which plugs into your cluster, out to the capped wire coming out of your ignition coil. It's really fairly simple, but if you end up having to switch a bunch of wires around for the cluster...well it's not hard but it can be a little frustrating. In my opinion, very worth it though. A factory service manual (FSM) is a huge help with these trucks if you really plan on doing a lot of work, and it will also tell you what every color wire going into your cluster does.

Thanks for the advise, it will help alot, I like to have a tach in everything so was hopeing it would work. And got a FSM on the way. Just got to get the new motor and get the interior done.

 

I'm in the process of adding the Sr5 gauge and oil/volt cluster to my '83...I'm using the built thread that (83) did..thanks Zach, that saved me a lot of time..I bought an Sr5 harness and just spliced the wires into the correct location, much easier than using a non-sr5 harness because the wires are in different locations on the three separate harnesses.

Regarding the smog hoses, I'm assuming smog isn't an issues, because here in California you'll never get it smoged without the proper vacuum hoses ect..If not run it nice and dirty.. Yotajims is a dismantler out of Denver which has a lot of good parts at fair prices..If you need some parts check him out...Good luck on the rebuilt..

 

So after some looking and talking with my hubby we have decided to put a 4.3 V6 in my truck, we found a donor truck with a rebuilt motor for 1000. Really excited.

 

im curious?????? where did you get a factory service manual? and have you by chance found a instrument cluster trim panel that goes around the heater and ash tray and radio? hopefully you know what i mean lol. i need one i would like one that would give me a spot for an updated radio but ill take what i can get. junk yards out here these are all gone except the ones that are broke.

 

I believe it's called a dash bezel...Actually I found one from the dealer if you can believe it...it was about $120..yea I know its a typical dealer screw job, but I was restoring the interior and it was worth it...Usually the junk yards have the radio portion torn out, usually to accommodate a CD player...which is why I wanted a new one..
