82 4wd 5SPEED?
So I just picked up my baby, a 1982 Toyota Pickup. When I drove it home, I didnt bother checking, the guy told me its a 4spd. I read up, and cant tell if 4wds came with 4spds? It seemed to rev super high in 4th at highway speed. I dont knoe, Im used to driving a big cummins 6spd.
Any info would totally be appreciated!

30 year old truck it could have a 4 speed. an L43 side shifter is obvious by the shift on side of the transmission

L45 4 speed and L50 and L52 5 speed looks the same externally

Really? Ive read multiple accounts of the L50s just eating themselves up, and 5th WAS usually the first to go, which is why I was a little nervous. But I guess itd be alright if that little 4spd went out, Id kind of rather have a five.

L43 is junk but how do you know he doesn't have an L45 4 speed?
L43 is a side shifter, L45 externally looks exactly like an L50-52.

I really love the truck. Its not too pretty, but its PRETTY awesome. Just have to figure out a few issues, like the heater not working. But the odo only reads 136,000, so I'll probably never sell it. Ive always loved toyotas, especially first gens. And I learned my lesson about keeping good cars after trading my '77 Camaro for a pile of junk that looked cool...Ha.

id still rather have a 5 spd than a 4 spd. having done the swap from L43 -L52 its like driving a whole new truck.

You could do a 22R head, but the swap most people go for is a 22R bottom end, 20R head. More revving capabilities. But I'll admit I'm just repeating what other people say. I have no direct experience.

If it is, don't mess with it! Like I mentioned, a 20R head on a 22R block is a very desirable thing, and people spend some good time and money getting it done. There is a fairly easy way, that I can't remember right now, to tell if your block is 22R or 20R. Probably a search would find it.
But even if your block is a 20R, I don't see a good reason to put a 22R head on it. I bought a '78 a few months ago with a 20R engine. It's my first experience with the 20R, and while this truck is very different from my 83, making it hard to make a direct comparison, I am not dissapointed with the 20R engine. I'm really pretty impressed with it, though I'd need to compare the transmission gearing between the two trucks to really know the whole story.
I don't even think a 22R head on a 20R engine would be an improvement. If it bothers you, Marlin Crawler sells valve cover stickers! Just buy a 22R sticker and put it on there. Problem solved.

I think that's a perfect solution!
I'd drive it till it died then figure the particulars out, hoping when that time came I'd actually have money to spend... Not that I'm doing that with my 82 or anything..

Its a 20r block, its stamped right on the block!
I think Im going to just keep it that way. Stray away from the norm, and just get all the power I can out of that little 20r. I already have a weber 38/38. Next is headers and intake, then full exhaust...But before everything, a compression test!
