81 manual transmission replacement
hey guys, need a bit of help here.
my current tranny is a five speed, and pops out of first, that's annoying and also makes a horrible noise if i don't push it and keep pushing it until it engages.
it also runs rough in 3rd gear and vibrates a bit at around 2k rpms.
What i would like to know is if i can change the tranny with a newer 5 speed? like one from and 89 or even a 94?, also can i use the same t-case?
maybe if i can get the tranny and t-case complete from a newer truck?
will they fit into the 22R
please any info you can give me will be great.
thanks...

yes you can do that with some changes
Stock L Series transmissions (L-43 and L-45 are 4 speeds, L50 & L52 are 5 speeds are 21 inches long)
Later transmissions G series, W Series etc are 25 inches long so you would need to move your cross member back 4" for the T/C mount, lengthen your front Driveshaft and shorten your rear driveshaft the correct amounts if swapping to a later model trans
