81-82 timing chain replacement

Hi guys, turns out my 88 runner has an 81-82 22RE in it. Don't even think that was made back then but hey. It's got a dual-roller timing chain that's got 98 links and is hooked up to an EFI.

I've used the two go-to guides for timing chain replacement on the newer engines:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...ingChain.shtml
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/timingchain/

My question is, on the passenger side guide there's a slot... or more like two holes right next to each other that are connected. How do I know which hole to use for mounting the guide?

Any link to an old fsm for these motors would be great too.

Thanks for that! Of course that's what it is... I got all caught up that someone must have dropped in an early engine and kept the 88 EFI.

I'm running OCR(text recognition) on the FSM so hopefully that will work and I can send you a pdf with the text as text. I'll let you know.

However, it does not answer my question. Which upper hole(on the guide) do I use to mount the passenger side guide?

Anyone have a fsm specific to the dual row timing chain?

I don't have the kit yet because I got the single row by accident, but here's a pic of the kit from Rock Products with the slot hilighted. (The guide I pulled off also had the slot)

i don't have the specific answer with regard to the holes, but you can try the FSM link in the my sig. it has a link to the ncttora.com site that will have one for 79-85's.

ted: engnbldr@engnbldr.com is a great source...he might be able to answer your question. when the time comes to rebuild my engine he will get my business

Ted's a great guy! Here's his answer if anyone else has this question.

"Hi!
Once the bottom hole is lined up only one hole will allow the bolt to fit at the top. That guide is designed to fit two different versions of the early block so you could have either one.
Install the bottom bolt loosely, swing it into alignment and snug it down to 12-14 ft lbs. All there is to it, that guide has no effect on the timing chain tension, all it does is protect the timing cover from chain slap.
Ted"
