I got A 81 4X4 and it ran great for about a week and the battery died on me so I tried to jump it off and one of the wires started smoking and burnt up. Turns out the battery was 7 years old and it killed the starter. Ive replaced the starter and the burnt wire but now none of the lights come on in the dash. the headlights still work when I turn them on. Ive also replaced some fuses. I think it may be the starter relay, a short, or is not grounded properly. The wiring has been redone from the original. Since it was running great for a week before the battery died I dont think itwould it be a short or not grounded properly, I think the wiring was redone when the battery was put in so the wiring is about 7 years old as well.

 

Your truck does not have a starter relay.
