79 pickup 4x4 short bed fuel tank

I just picked up a 79 short bed in great condition. It has a 20r. Rebuilt a few years ago. The fuel tank is rusted out and leaking. I'm having trouble finding a tank to fit the stock mounts. I know the fuel pump is in the tank but i was just thinking about dropping the stock tank and putting a small tank in the bed and an in line fuel pump. Anyone ever done this? And help or advice would be appreciated.

If it's a carbed 20r (which it is 99.9999% for sure), the fuel pump is not in the tank, it's on the side of the head, but you do have the sending unit and pre-filter/pickup in it.

This is right, you should have a mechanical fuel pump

Thanks! I appreciate the info. So would it be possible to put a small tank in the bed until I can find a replacement for the stock tank?

it's been done, you could also make your own brackets to hold another fuel tank in place under the bed.

Just get the tank fixed.....I don't know where you are but I have had fantastic results with gastank-renu (http://gastankrenu.com/)
They even give a lifetime warranty on their work. One of the better shops that does it is Moyer's in PA, you can ship the tank to them if there is no one local.
