79 gas gauge

I have never had a gas gauge act like as weird as this in my 79 toy. It works fine from full to 1/2 but then it just falls over. Is the sender serviceable or is it shot?

The float needs to be replaced would be my guess

does anyone sell the float or sending unit... My local dealer is little help and all the auto parts chains don't even have a part number
