I'm new to this site and to 1st gen Toyota's....from what I thought thru my research was that the DLX came with 4spd and SR5 package came with 5spd.....so when I got my 81 I was surprised to see it had the 5spd as it wasn't a SR5. I initally thought it must have had a tranny swap to 5 spd seeing that it wasn't a SR5, but the data plate just confirmed it was born with a L52.....so I gather it was an option over the stock 4spd in the DLX model?....

 

Optional for 4WD Long Bed Deluxe only. Not available for 4WD Standard Bed Deluxe. According to the 1981 Toyota Trucks sales brochure(found here).

 

I think you could get a five speed in any of the three base dlx or Sr5
