4WD 22R Oil Pan / Oil Pickup Tube Question

I'm working on restoring an 82 4WD Pickup. The "early" 22R in it came with the oil pan that has the raised ridge and 19mm drain hole that was designed to use a cork gasket.

I've read all over that the newer style oil pans (that use sealant), are compatible with 22Rs from 79-95... however, I've gotten two now that won't clear my oil pickup tube. The old pan clears it without issue and really does look a bit bigger than the two newer pans I've tried.

It's been suggested that there were two styles of oil pickup tube for the 4WD 22Rs and some of the earlier trucks came with a taller oil pickup tube... but I can't find any sort concrete information about this.

Does anybody here know if this is true before I go out and try and find a "newer" style of oil pickup tube?

From what I read the big difference is between the 2wd vs 4wd in the pans & pickup tubes. Here's a link with some info but not a whole lot

Pire 4x4 has a thread titled " not in FAQ about 2wd and 4wd oil pan 22r " just google that section for the thread because I can't get the link to work

Thanks for getting back to me! I am aware of the different between the 2WD and 4WD oil pans/pickup tubes, as well as the front sump Celica pans. That is not my issue however.

I'm purely talking about 4WD oil pans – the earlier 4WD pan with the raised edge and the newer style pan with the groove for sealant. The newer style won't fit my 22R because the oil pickup tube seems to extend down too far.

It's been suggested that later 22Rs came with a slightly different oil pickup tube that doesn't extend down quite as far, but I can't find anything concrete about this... that's where my question is -- if anyone here happens to know if Toyota made any slight changes to the 4WD pickup tubes in later years.

That's perplexing? I always heard 4wd pans would interchange on all 22r/re engines & LCE & the YotaShop both sell the same 4wd pan & tube for 79-95 22r/re's so I'm stumped. Hopefully someone else chimes in and knows what's going on. Maybe your pickup tube is a 2wd? Anyway just a guess & trying to help/learn with you

You and I are on the same page as being perplexed! Haha. I thought this would be a simple swap, but of course it's not. This truck seems to have all sorts of oddities as I put it back together. I appreciate you trying to help and the information you've provided though. My truck definitely has the 4WD Pickup tube and the original pan was a 4WD pan.

I'm hoping a 4WD Pickup shows up in the wrecking yards out here sometime (they're so rare now) so I can go and take some measurements/snag it. I'm not sure I want to spend the money on an oil pickup tube online just to have the same issue.

Interestingly, I found this on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Pump-Pi...US!-1#viTabs_0

"The one you receive may be slightly different in appearance, but fully functional . 22re used 2 different designs over the years(see picture 1 and picture 2), both flow the exact same amount of oil yet vary in appearance and design. Noreturns for "it looks different" as this difference is purely a cosmetic design change ."

I'm socking this information away for the future. I'm trying to buy a couple broke down toyota 4x4's from a guy. "If" he gets back to me asap I'll jerk one off & send it to ya.

(Edit) just called him again, going out tomorrow afternoon around 5 to look at the trucks. If I can buy them/afford them I'll hook you up.

Thanks man, let me know! If you got access to one and even were able to take some height measurements that'd be appreciated.

As a follow up, I finally sourced a newer style oil pickup tube. There are definite changes. Overall, the newer style pickup has a much larger diameter before tapering to a smaller diameter where it bolts into the block. The pickup is also about a 1/2" shorter than the older style my truck came with. The newer style oil pan fits up against the block no problem with the new pickup tube.

Wish I had seen this thread earlier, I have one of those sitting in my spare parts bin.

Good find.

It's all good. Thank you anyways though. I'm glad I was able to verify that there are indeed differences and the replacement allowed me to use the newer pan!
