somewhere I learned that Toyota made the early trucks in 3/4 ton as well as 1/2 using the same body style. I think I may have one because the ride is STIFF, even though my shocks are 25 years old, this thing rides rough and seems like a plank with tires. Any easy way to tell? Or do I have to go to the stealership?

 

these are pretty much 1/4 ton trucks.

it rides harsh from short springs. no way around that unless you swap to longer springs (IE, chev 63's).

they did make one ton versions though... or at least that's what i've seen on the back of a few pickups some years ago.

Actually the springs are stiff riding because they have sagged with time. When they do that the softer upper leaves in the pack settle down onto the stiffer lower leaves and that makes the overall spring rate higher. In back, your springs are probably riding on the stiff overload leaf (the one that is over 1/2" thick on the bottom of the pack) and that makes things very rough. Likewise, up front (assuming a leaf spring front end), you probably have an inch or so of up travel before hitting the rubber bump stop. That means any bump over 1" tall and the front end bottoms out and that makes for a very rough ride. Finally your spring shackles are likely rusted into the spring bushings and that prevents them from moving freely and that aggravates the rough ride as well.

And there are 1/2-1 ton 2WD pickups, they typically had the dual wheels on the rear axle. Commonly found in chassis form under the little RVs based upon the Toyota pickup.

And since ive moved back to cali, i cant count how many of the dualies i have seen.

'83 2WD 3/4 tons exist, but you would probably know if you had one.

Check the Mfr's plate - it should show the GVWR.

 

i have a 1990 toyota 2wd 22re and i have put over a 1/2 ton in it and it did fine

 

hmmm, now I really feel like a newb(I know, I am one too) check the GVWR!

 

The title to my 92 4x4 says it is a 3/4 ton. Many people don't believe this but I will post a picture on here of the title when I am home.

 

first-gen 3/4 tons are pretty cool, beefed up suspension, etc. 2wd long box only though, a teacher at my school has one.
