1gen speedo gear help
Hello all. I'm working on my build and have run into a problem concerning the speedo drive gear. I'm in the process of wanting to convert all my gauges over to something like Autometer's electrics instead of the stock gauges. In looking for a speedometer, most all that I've found will accept only a .104 square drive cable, but the stock speedometer drive gear has a round end with a slot. I've looked over the web for a conversion and haven't found a replacement drive gear for Toyota that has a square drive. I have a L52 5 speed gearbox. Any ideas/mods would be very helpful to accomplish my gauge upgrade project.

There probably is enough slop in length, but most all aftermarket speedos have a 5/8"-18 threaded input, where the stock Toyota speedo cable has a slip fit and snapped in at the gauge end. Guess it's time for a custom made cable, huh

My problem has been solved. In talking with the guys at the speedo shop, I'm going to install a Correction Box with two cables. One cable comes off the case with the correct hookups going to the box and another cable from the box to the speedo. This way I can get the speedo calibrated to the actual miles traveled in a measured 5 or 10 mile test and have the correction box dialed in. If I change tire size, it will be a breeze to re-calibrate the box ratio. I can mount the box anywhere I please, so nice to have options when upgrading the old beast.
That's my fix and I'm sticking to it Thanks
