1983 Creme Toyota Hilux 4x4 5-speed (Slow Build)

I just purchased this Creme 1983 Toyota Hilux 4x4 with 5-speed from member @rickc5 (thanks Rick!). It was located in Grand Junction, CO. Randomly, my father was driving through Grand Junction and was able to inspect the truck for me. It turned out to be immaculate, so I pulled the trigger. I should take delivery of the truck early next week. Here are some photos to tide you (me) over.

PO installed seats and console from a 1994 4Runner, plus added Dynamat, and new carpet in the interior. The truck also has ProComp wheels, LCE exhaust header, desmog, and LCE Weber carb. Along with tons of other goodies.

Plans for the truck are:
  • Old Man Emu 2.5" Lift
  • OEM Toyota Steel Wheels
  • 33" BFG Mud Terrains
  • 7" Round Headlight Conversion
  • Twin Stick Conversion
  • Marlin Crawler Dual Case
  • Marathon Seat Covers
  • Air Conditioning
  • SR5 Graphics

Also, if anyone has a set of OEM Toyota steelies, I'm looking to go back to OEM.

They came on 1979 - 1983 pickups, and 1984 - 1989 4Runners.

Wow that is a nice looking truck! I've always liked the look of the old steel wheels.

Same here. But lots of people like to swap for alloys. So I’m hoping I can find someone who wants to trade!

Yessir! I spend a lot of time on Mud because I have a 1977 Land Cruiser.

But I’ve always wanted a 2nd gen Hilux, so I just kept my eye on YotaTech. Plus lots of good write-ups on here!

You may wish to check out my old truck before you pop for the OME lift. My suspension shop told me that they thought it had a 1.5-2.0" lift when did the suspension work for me. Also, I forgot to tell you that the spare wheel & tire are original. Yep, a white steelie. FYI- At one point I tried to use some Toyota mags from 84-89, but they rubbed on the front calipers.

Nice!

I just love the Old Man Emu lifts. I’ve had them on all my trucks.

I noticed the spare was original - now I just need 4 more!

Yep, the spare tire & wheel are original. I attempted to buy a larger (taller) spare tire from Discount Tire, but was told that the original spare wheel is too narrow for anything larger (than the original size tire). The only tire that Discount carried for that wheel was the original size. 31s or 33s just won't fit. It's either 5" or 5.5" wide, so you have a couple of options: 1) locate wider wheels that look like the original white ones with Toyota bolt pattern, and have them painted, or 2) have some wider steel wheels made.

Back in 1971 I found a wheel builder in San Jose that could build you any custom steel wheel in a matter of minutes. He would weld the center you wanted (Ford 5 bolt in my case) into any size rim. He made some wide 15" steel wheels for my 1970 Mustang Mach I. They came painted in a light grey.

Please keep us informed as to how you proceed with this. I'm real curious.

Will do!

I think OEM Hilux steel wheels came in 15” x 6” on some models.

But you are correct, a lot of national brand tire stores will not mount oversized tires on narrow wheels. And also will not mount a large tire if they deem it “too large” for the spare under the bed, even if it fits.

I have 1977 Land Cruiser and I had to go to a Mom-and-Pop tire store to get them to mount 33” tires on my 15”x5.5” Land Cruiser wheels.

Quick update! I took delivery of the truck last week and already made a few changes.

First, I got the vehicle insured, inspected, registered and new plates. I also pulled the bed cap off.

I also loathe the chrome Ultra Mirrors, so I pulled them off and installed OEM Toyota replica mirrors. I had to do something with the extra holes in the door, so I plugged them with fender finishing bolts and washers. I'm not crazy about it, but it's better than the chrome mirrors.

Then I pulled off the front brush guard.

I was also going to change the wheel and tire setup.

I wanted to run OEM Toyota steel wheels.

Unfortunately I purchased the wrong wheels. I bought 15" x 6" Toyota steel wheels for 1985 to 1989 Pickups and 4Runners w/ IFS (Toyota PN: 42601-35390-05). They have the incorrect backspacing and do not clear the tie rod in the front.

I know OEM Land Cruiser steel wheels will work, but I don't want the tabs for the hubcaps. I'm thinking about swapping to some Wheel Vintiques until I can find the correct OEM Pickup wheels (Toyota Part Number: 42601-60082).

Does anyone know if this wheel will work?

Brand: Wheel Vintiques
Model: Series 62
Wheel Diameter: 15"
Wheel Width: 6"
Bolt Pattern: 6 x 139.70mm / 6 x 5 1/2 in.
Backspacing: 3.75 inch
Center Bore: 4.25 inch / 107.95 mm
Lug Nut Seat Style: Conical Seat 60 Degrees

I have 15X10 Wheel Vintiques on my 81. I had to run spacers in the front to clear the tie rods. Wheel Vintiques will make the wheels for you with a custom offset. I bought mine through Summit Racing. I didn't buy the ones you posted a picture of. I bought the Smoothies with the small babymoon cap. I cut the center out of two caps so the hub lock sticks through like a stock cap. You have to make sure the center hole in the wheel will fit over the front locking hub. These are the wheels I bought. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/wvi-12-5006042 Here's a picture of them on my truck.

Thanks! Yours are 4.5” backspacing, so I’m hoping the 3.75” will clear. What size spacers do you run?

Looking good man! I too had to go to a mom and pop tire place to have 34" tires mounted.

Yeah, I've got no problem mounting the big tires on narrow wheels. I just want to make sure the wheels fit the truck this time!

I ordered the Wheel Vintiques Series 62 from Summit yesterday. Fingers crossed they clear the tie rod!

I think inch and a half thick was the thinnest I could get, so that's what's in front. I put 2" in the back because the rear track is narrower than the front track, and I wanted it to be the same.

I removed the front brush guard and got the round headlight swap done.

Before and After.

Still need the '79 - '81 grill badge.
