1982 Diesel Injection Pump repair?

hey, sorry if this is listed anywhere already, i couldn't find much info on this in general. the injection pump in my 1982 diesel pickup (2.2 "L" engine) has been leaking for a while and i keep temporarily 'fixing' it myself so it feels like its time to get it actually repaired, does anyone know of anywhere specifically i could ship it to for a rebuild? in my experience most places near me in the south don't want to touch anything even remotely related to this truck even for routine stuff, since its old, diesel, toyota. never super popular down here.

or alternatively does anyone know of a good write up anywhere of how to do it myself (would really rather not open this can of worms myself but if theres absolutely no other option i will...)? i have the FSM but it doesnt go into anything beyond getting the whole injector in and out.

in case anyones curious - heres a picture of where its leaking from, ive replaced that o-ring a couple of times from the top by removing the nut and lever and kinda wedging it down in there, then once it wears itself out, from being improperly installed no doubt, it will start leaking more and more diesel until the car wont start and i replace it again. the first time i took that lever off to check it out the original ring had come out in pieces/mostly disintegrated itself.

if a rebuild isnt an option, what are my choices? can it be swapped or diverted or anything? my guess is no but... ?
any ideas or input are super appreciated! i know this engine gets some hate from people but its a great truck other than this injection issue, has less than 90k original miles on it, and i really dont wanna have to dump it or anything. thanks

Pump repair

At its age it may be out of tolerance just due to wear. How are you installing the "O" ring? Are you putting it in wet or dry? I would think wet with fuel or a light coat of Vaseline. Almost any diesel repair shop should be able to rebuild it. One thing for certain is to have it absolutely clean. And don't work on it in a dusty invroment. One small speck of sand or dirt could ruin a pump.

"Wedging it in from the top"
kind of makes inspecting the shaft and housing for wear and damage impossible which based on "when I took the old hard one out in pieces" I expect you'll find both..

You'll find more detailed help on the Australian based forums than here at Yotatech to find the pump repair book, we don't see many L series engines stateside..

It looks like the easiest thing would be to seperate the top from bottom- where the solenoid and governor are - so you can flip the top over and have a better chance of seating the oring cleanly.
or ship it to australia. Or look on australian ebay for one?

thanks for the advice yall i appreciate it;
i think my best bet at this point is going to be just going for it and removing the whole pump myself and then trying to find a diesel shop that can rebuild this (i assume) Denso pump. looks like its usually 500-1000 just for the rebuild on the pump. gonna be a pain to get out tho.
ive looked for replacement units but they are rare and hard to verify, pretty much only in SE asia or australia when they do come up, and i also dont trust that spending 500 plus international shipping on a 40 yr old injection pump will be in any better condition than my current one.
ive been trying to find the part number so i can get a real quote from some shops, but havent been able to find it. i think i know where the pate with the info is on the pump but i cant see it from any angle without getting it out first. :/

I know youve already done a lot of research but have you figured out if a 2L pump can swap in?
seems like theres a lot more support and parts for that motor.

Although in the end it may not save you money vs a rebuild.

This is a bit out of my element, but I did find this online. Maybe it will be some help.(?)

https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/s/T...Emissions.html

I also found this vid on Youtube:

"Leaking injector pump fix, 2.4 & 2.8 diesel Hilux" -

The vid is Australian and the pump shown is for the 2L Diesel (yours is the "L" engine) but the pump looks very similar, and he does show the locations of all the O-rings that could leak. I'd suggest that if you try to replace the Orings you use Viton rings, as they are made to resist gas & diesel degradation. Here's a Harbor Freight Viton METRIC Oring kit that should get you all you need:
https://www.harborfreight.com/180-pi...kit-67525.html

No luck finding a rebuild kit online that I can be reasonably sure is for your exact pump.
