The 2-valve SOHC 2.0 L (1,972 cc) 21R was produced from 1978 through 1987.
Cylinder bore was 84 mm (3.31 in) and stroke was 89 mm (3.5 in).
Output in 1978, constrained by emissions, was 105 hp (78 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 116 lb·ft (157 N·m) at 3,600 rpm. Air injection and California emissions equipment for the 21R-C (1982–1985) dropped power down to 90 hp (67 kW) at 5,000 rpm. The air-injected Japanese version, the 21R-U, produced 105 hp (78 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 120 lb·ft (162 N·m) at 3,600 rpm but dropped to 101 hp (75 kW) at 5,400 rpm and 114 lb·ft (154 N·m) at 4,000 rpm in 1986."

21R engines were never imported to the US, they were only used in Japan, the engine is slightly smaller in displacement than the 22R, if I remember correctly the block is the same externally but the cylinder head is different, the 21R used two carburetors, this did not meet emission control requirements in the US and that's why they were not allowed here, the manifolds were also different and did not match up to the cylinder heads of the 22R.

when you say toyota motor that means stock from the factory to me a crate engine isnt stock from the factory. and im just gonna say that stickers are real easy to make. my father who is a toyota master tech and has been for almost 40 years says that these engines were not stock, u would have to buy the head seperatley from toyota.

As far as I know they didn't come factory in anything over here, but the research I've done points to them being a pretty common 'low mileage' replacement engine import from Japan. I believe the quote I posted above meant 'never imported into the US' as in, in a vehicle from the factory, because there are definitely a few still around.
My searching for 21Rs has also led me to quite a few Chinook RVs for some reason...wonder if there's a connection there.

the 21RU was part of the Japanese motor exchange program. the parts are next to impossible to get in the US. I had a head blow on mine and it was easier and cheaper to just switch back to the 22R.

The 21R was NEVER OFFERED in the USA in any vehicle sold on the road. Plain and simple, it never existed in production vehicles bound for US soil.
The 21R-U and 21R-C engines ARE a real Toyota engine, available overseas as well as in Toyota Forklifts. When you order a crate engine from one of those godawful Japanese crate engine warehouses *shudder* they send you a 21R engine. It is available with the round OR the square style valve cover, which helps narrow down its exact year.
They are NOT a dual carb system (though I am sure some company somewhere made such a manifold)
