FS[SouthCent]: (tx) Steering box from an 86
#5
this is a 4runner, so it's 4wd. 2WD 4runners were not available until later. I thought by 86 all 4runners were had power steering, no manual boxes were used. I dont claim to be as much of a minitruck/4runner guru compared to land cruisers, but they stopped using manual boxes in the mid-70s.

I'm still a bit confused...
Here you say it is a manual box, though you are not sure.
4WD, good. Thanks.
You are also saying that "you think" '86 4runner has a power steering box but again it seems you are not sure?
I see a new 4wd manual or power steering box is today available from supply houses for an 86 truck, so i can only assume they were an option. I am obviously no guru either. I,m not trying to be a pain in the ^¥€, but would'nt it remove all doubt if you just looked at the top of it and see if there are power steering hose ports?
Thanks for the link to the pics, although i can not make out if it has the hose ports or not.

Hold on.
I compared the remanufactured power steer and manual steer boxes available for an 86 4runner to your supplied pics.
It appears that it is in fact a power steering unit, which makes sense. But both manual and power are available for an 86 Runner. You can tell by the larger housing up by the input shaft.
I was hoping for a manual unit.
Thanks,
Kirk

They are rare, but manual steering 4wd's do exist.
