1988 4runner w/ 5VZFE, 5 speed & 4wd - $6000 OBO
**Edit: Price drop to 5500. I'd also be willing to drive 200 miles in pretty much any direction to meet up
Up for sale is my 1988 Toyota 4runner SR5 complete with a 5vzfe from a 1999 4runner. The body has ~290,000 miles on it and the engine has ~80,000 miles. I am located near Little Rock, AR. Looking to get $5500 OBO
Here is a short list of all of the stuff that was purchased / replaced during the swap.
- 3.4 L 5vzfe from 1999 4RUNNER (~75k on engine)
- 99 4runner MT ECU (by far the hardest thing to source for the swap)
- 99 4runner Wiring Harness
- 3VZ to 5VZ Swap Harness (identical to the one Off Road Solutions sells for ~$600)
- Marlin Crawler 3.4 Heavy Duty Clutch, 1200 lb Pressure Plate, and Throw out & pilot Bearing
- Marlin Crawler 3.4 L Flywheel
- 99 4runner Radiator
- Radiator Hoses
- Clutch Hoses
- Plugs & Wires (replaced with OEM parts)
- Custom Exhaust consisting of a Flowmaster 40 Series Muffler, 50 state legal catalytic converter, & 2.25" tubing.
- OEM Timing Belt & Water pump Kit
- Marlin Crawler Slave & Master Cylinder
- Both o2 sensors
- Optima Battery Box from Rough Stuff Off Road
- Optima Red Top Battery
- All oil seals on the engine (the engine does not leak a drop of oil)
Truck has functioning OBD2 port and throws no check engine lights. All of the emissions devices from the 99 were retrofitted to the truck, so it would pass emissions if Arkansas had that requirement. In short, everything under the hood is as it should be for a 1999 4runner.
Other things that have been done in the 3 years I have owned this truck:
- 2003-2008 4Runner 16" Aluminum Rims
- Treadwright Guard Dog MT tires (265/75R16) with less than 2000 miles on them (with matching spare)
- Manual Locking Hub Conversion with parts from Trail-Gear Offroad (originally had Auto Hubs)
- Shocks, Inner & Outter Tie Rods, pitman arm, idler arm, upper ball joints
- Rear helper springs (ZUK Mod)
- 1" Body Lift from Wab Fab Offroad
- Re manufactured Starter
- Cobra CB Radio & Radio Shack 102" Whip
- Bikini Top from Wab Fab Offroad for the summer months
- Mobil 1 fluids all around
- Factory Toyota Red Coolant
- Rebuilt Alternator
- Denso Fuel Pump & Fuel Filter
- JC Whitney Vinyl Floor Kit for front passenger compartment
- Auxiliary fuse box
- Alignment performed less than a month ago
Now the bad, which are pretty much all cosmetic (I used this thing for camping, so these things never bothered me):
- It has a cracked windshield
- AC works, but has needed to be recharged after every winter since the swap
- The paint job done by the previous owner is not the best (though it does turn a few heads!)
- Dent in the Driver side rear corner (has been pulled out & painted to prevent rust)
Some things that are included along with the truck:
- 1983 Gear driven transfer case & cross member (had plans to put a doubler on it, but never got around to it)
- Tons of Miscellaneous interior / exterior parts
- Pristine rear window & regulator
- 63" Hi-Lift Jack
- All of the wiring diagrams that I used for the swap
Now on to the pics!

It starts up every time you turn the key and has had ZERO mechanical issues since the swap. On multiple occasions I have driven this thing several hours to the trail, off road-ed it all weekend, and then driven it home with no problems. I would trust this to drive me anywhere in the nation! I have over six grand invested into parts alone on this truck not including its original purchase price, the labor put into it, or the stuff that I am including along with it.
PM me with any questions
Thanks for looking!

Thanks! Yeah, I've been teetering between selling it and keeping it, so its been going on and off craigslist a lot! The final decision on that matter has been made though; its time for it to go.
