Is it safe to use a chop saw to cut metal?
I was wondering if I can cut metal by using a metal cutting wheel on a chop saw that is intended for wood? Or, should I get a cut off saw with a metal cutting wheel?
At this point in time, I just want to make some cuts on 2 1/4" square tubing that is about 1/4" thick. Can I just use an angle grinder?

I tried it once with a cheap miter saw and a metal cutting blade and it didn't work very well.
Go with a real metal cutting chop saw. They have motors and bearings that are more suited to that type of cutting.
You can use a cut off wheel on a grinder, but it will take a little while and it won't be as precise.

There's no reason you *can't* use a wood cutting mitre saw, with a chop saw blade to cut metal. But, a chop saw is made specifically for that.
If you have an old wood mitre saw, and have a way to fab up a clamp brace, then why the heck not do it.

I used to do it all the time, BUT i had an additional guard i fabbed incase the disc exploded, and it was a dewalt saw with warranty
, without seeing your setup, i would advise against it.... you should be using some sort of band saw with a metal (cutting) blade, that would be more suited for what you are doing. If you still decide on it, be very careful, of course you know to wear PPE of some sort, and to go real slow, I was always told "let the disc do the work, dont push it"

Not to thread jack.
I've got a wet tile saw that I have been wanting to toss. But every time I go to toss it I wonder if I could cut metal with it. Anyone ever tried?
Oh I have used a wood chop saw with a metal blade to cut exhaust pipes before. It works but its not pretty.
