I am wondering how big of an air compressor you think I would need to run air tools in my garage. I have a napa impact gun and an assortment of cutters and ratchets.

I have no idea what I would need, the old shop i used to work in had a huge 100 gallon or something. Would a cheaper 20 gallon craftsmen work? What do I have to look for in PSI and CFM?

Look at cfm at 90 psi, you want this high.
Larger the tank the less it cycles.

I have as a spare a nice Sandborn 5 HP single stage It put out around 12CFM that was fine for impacts ratchets but for grinders it just couldn`t keep up .

Bought it in 1989 from Matco I think I paid less then $1000.00 back then.

Now I have a 7HP 2 stage Big Red that fills my air needs at present .

 

about 200-300 dollars. I've seen some 20+ gallon ones at harbor freight and sears for that much

I use a 4HP, 11.8CFM 20 gallon, 220V Campbell-Hausfield compressor (single stage but will be going 2-stage when this one dies) and it is reasonably adequate for most tools. Would not work well for sand blasting or anything demanding like that.
