Marlin Crawler Shifter Seat and Socket

89 4Runner, 22RE, 5-speed W56-C. I had a ton of slop in my shifter and found it difficult to get into gear and kind of made it feel as if my syncros were trashed. Caught wind of Marlin Crawler's HD Shifter seat and socket so I thought I'd give it a try. I opened up my shifter housing and found my old shifter seat had completely crumbled to nothingness and all that was left was the mangled pieces and the rubber seat. Install wasn't too bad: mine was a bit tighter than I had expected but it did fit with some persuasion from some very light hammer tapping. After I got it together I am blown away at the difference it makes. It is like I have a brand new transmission. The gears go in like a hot knife through butter and it is nice and tight. It even reduce my throw by about 20-30% since it is tight again.

WAY TO GO MARLIN ON A GREAT PRODUCT!

I have mine installed, and can't wait to test it out once my trans swap is complete. glad to hear it makes a noticeable improvement.

One of these days I am gonna get around to changing mine in both the trans and t-case. Getting tired of having to bungee cord my t-case shifter because the trans shifter pops it out of 4-lo on the 1-2 shift. First time I noticed it I thought I grenaded the t-case but it was only in N.

Talking Shifter Retainer removal tool

made my own SST

since i had the idea of using an old socket or some tubing I thought I would give it a shot. 6 minutes with the grinder I had this:
1" square tubing, notched and bent in slightly to fit in the shifter retainer

slip it over the shift lever

use your tool of choice, push down and turn to the left about a 1/4 turn

bingo:
I totally agree. Great product. it makes a huge difference. I was able to get rid of the dog legged TC lever I had
Here is the install on my '81 L-52:

I installed the Marlin Sifter Seat and Socket to keep my 4runner from popping out of 1st gear during accelerations. Since the install sometime in 2008 I haven't had a single problem (other than worn synchros) with shifting and it staying in gear on its own. Great produce and looks like it will last for at least another 100K miles or more.

Just found this thread. I did it to my 88 4Runner and it made the shifter feel like the tranny was brand new. But I still have to add it to the 94. Best money you'll ever spend. Highly recommended x2!

I'm in the process of getting these seats. From the positive repsonse, can't wait to get them. One question...Never replaced the shift socket, what is the best way to go about it?

I ran these in my MKIII Supra for a few years, and put some in my '94 4x4 Pickup probably 3-4yrs ago. Really tightens up the shift pattern. Pair it with a gear oil change (Redline MT90) and it's like a whole new gearbox.

PS- in the 3+ years I've used them, the slop has not increased at all- still as tight as the day I put them in. It's been around 20k+ miles.

Now I might have to make an order ASAP. I've been putting this off as well.
Getting tired of bungee cording my t-case shifter in order to stop from popping out of 4lo into N during a 1 - 2 shift. But I think I've already said that. lol.
