There is also Brown Mountain OHV Area I've only explored a very short ways in before a thunder storm rolled in. Only trails 1 & 8 are open to 4WD, and they are both easy rated (fine with me, I'm stock and not too experienced
), looks to be just over 6mi. of trail. I'm ready to go check it out, anyone want to join me???

problem is now football season has started and I'm an NCSU season ticket holder so i go to ALL home games. The only weekend that I can really do more than just a day trip is the weekend of Oct 6th. If people just want to do a sunday run, or even a weekday run (which I would actually prefer) we can go anytime with adequate planning ahead so people can get the day off work.

It's tough for me to get a weekday off, so it would have to be a weekend.Planned trip aside, I did a little exploring around the Haywood/Madison County/TN boarder area. Wesley Creek Rd. off of Max Patch Rd. off of Hwy. 209, turns into a nice little 4WD trail.
I only ventured about 1/2mi. down the trail since I was with my kids and no other vehicle. I'm going back soon to do some more exploring around that area soon, looks like there might be some other good stuff. Pic's do no justice.

If anyone local wants to make a Sunday (best for me) out of it, I'd prefer the safety of numbers. Post up here and we'll see what we can do.

I'd say it took me about an hour (wasn't paying too much attention) from Fairview. I took 40 up to the 209 exit, you could also get there via 63/Leicester Hwy. I want to head up there again soon, with about two weeks notice, I could arrange a time. Sunday's are about the only day I can go and not be carting the kids around with me.
As far as other places close by, about the only other I knew of, Schumont Mtn. near Lake Lure, has been bulldozed and developed.
There is Heck Creek Rd. in Madison County where my avatar pic was taken. Supposedly there is some wheelin' to do near the WCU campus, but I'm not sure exactly where.

Take 107 off of 23 to the right through Sylva and Cullowhee. Turn left on Caney Fork. Turn left again on Chastine Creek Rd, just past a cemetery. We took the first trail, about a mile up the road, to the right. Mostly we encountered a bunch of dead ends, but we didn't explore everything we saw and were up there for a good 2 1/2-3hrs. This is Nantahala Game Land so the majority of use is probably hunters. Nothing was too extreme that my stock 4Runner couldn't handle, and was certainly challenging enough for my abilities. After that we drove a little further up the road and took a trail off to the left, small stream crossing right at the road and into a rhododendren tunnel (fold in your mirrors
) followed this in about a mile then we were running out of time, so it was time to head home. Still a lot more to explore up there I think. My best day of wheelin' ever!!!
We did see a good collection of Yota's sitting at the intersection of 107 and Caney Fork, we all waved but we didn't stop (in retrospect we decided we should have
) Anyone from here???Now some pics...

Top of Wesley Creek Rd.

Lots of rock stairs.

One of many stream crossings, this was one of the smallest.

Very large stacked rock wall.

I know that theres a name for this little bald, but I don't remember.

This was about 2mi. in from the I-40 end of the trail. No idea how it would have gotten here.
Certainly a worthwhile trip, took about 2hrs. to do the 10mi. including lots of stopping for trail scouting and picture taking, I'll be going again soon.

If anyone decides to go wheeling within a hour or so drive of Davie county (30 minutes west of Winston, 30 minutes east of Statesville, 15 minutes north of salisbury) please let me know I'll go with you. I dont really know of anywhere besides Uwharrie.
