CB Install in a 3rd Gen truck/2nd Runner

I'm going to be installing a CB here sometime soon and I am trying to figure out how to mount the thing in my dash. I was thinking about a normal size unit to go into my extra DIN slot, or a compact unit to go into the ashtray slot. Does anyone have any picture of CB installations in thier trucks?

Also, I have to mount the antenna somewhere and was thinking on the front rail of my bed in the center. Kind of like where people mount them on top of toolboxes, but without the toolbox. Is that an ok spot?

Get a Cobra 18 WX ST 2 .. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=1233548 $50 bucks at good ole wally world ! and with a little modifcation it will fit in the DIN slot perfect.

Heres a write up on installing it in a taco.. pretty easy and stright foward.
http://www.spaldam.com/Hobbies/Tacoma/cbradio/

For the antenna, it would be alot better mounted on the rear bumper. With the Antenna mounted directly behind the cab of the truck, it limits the area facing foward the antenna can transmit to. Will it still work ? Yeha it'll work great... but it'll be better mounted on the bumper Go to radio shack and buy a 102" steel whip antenna... $16 bucks.. Set your SWR, and you'll be a trucker in no time !

For all your CB questions check out http://www.cbradiousa.com/faq.htm Theres lots of good info there on chooseing an antenna and where to mount it.

Hope this helps !!

I have mine mounted in my ashtray. No pictures, sorry. I might move it one of these days. I find it a pain to change channels, adjust volume, etc with it down that low. Also the mic cord get tangled in with the shifter sometimes. My install was kinda of half assed though.

I used the empty pocket underneath the radio...

I mounted the mike to the shifter. The mike has up/down channel buttons, so I can change channels w/o having to look at the radio.

What radio is that? I wanted a uniden but they are too big to fit into the open slot I think.

I've got a Cobra 18 WXT 2 and it fits right below my cd player. I always wanted to get rid of that open tray below it so in it went. As for my antennae, I bought a few "L" brackets and painted them satin black then mounted it on top of my roof rack. Also just for the coolness factor and noise, I put up a small speaker behind my rearview mirror with velcro. It works like a charm.

Yeah, it took me awhile to find one that would fit in the pocket (sort of). I did have to do some trimming around the opening. It's a Radio Shack model that they had on clearance. I haven't seen them in the shops since then, but they might have it in a catalog. It had all the basic features I wanted:

- 10 weather channels
- channel controls on the mike
- PA
- ext speaker
- channal scanning

...just stepped out to get the model number - TRC 496

How do you guys like the Cobra 18 WX ST 2 over other radios? I wanted a uniden because the seem to have a good reputation and I've heard newer cobras aren't as good as they used to be. I really like the fact that the cobra will go into the DIN slot though.

I also have the Cobra 18 WX ST II.
So far I have been real happy with it. Zero problems in the two years I've had it.
The only thing I wish I had was a PA so that I could hear the CB if I was outside. To remedy that I bought an external speaker which gave me better volume gain.

Runner kid I think I'm going to do my antenna like that. How did you attach the mount to the body? Did you use some kind of metal screws Mine is a truck but that shoudln't really matter. Thanks for the ideas guys.

4RunnerKid,

Where did you get your CB mount? I've been looking at local shops, but haven't seen one like it. Does it have a brand name?

Thanks

Ive been searching for a CB radio that will fit in the slot under the CD player, like the Cobra 18 WXST II, but also has PA capabilities. Other than the Radio Shack model listed about, which doesnt seem to be available any longer, are there any other options? Ive searched everywhere but havent found anything. I would appreciate any recommendations.
