I just wanted to say a thanks to all for the posts! Becasue the HS series winches won't fit in my TJM 17 bumber I think I will go with the M8000, they seem to be good value for the $! I think I will also invest the money in the synthetic cable, seems like a good safety thing to do, and makes handling the cable much easier on the hands too!

Also, like to see the fellow MN yototech'er on the web!

By what I see from Corey's pictures id that the XD has a longer drum that would hold more cable. Besides that they look very similar. Could it be that XD= Extra Drum? I= integrated solenoid that sticks up in the air.

I don't think you can fit much more than 100 of cable on an M 8000.

And here I thought "i" series stood for "I can't fit it in my ARB."

I intend to add a HS 9500 at Christmas if Santa is cooperative. By the numbers, it only needs little over an inch on one side that I am having a hard time not finding on my ARB. People in the know who I have spoken to about this have said it is possible with a little adjustment. After using both HS and non-HS winches, making it work makes a lot of sense to me.

I put a Warn HS9500 on my TJM T-15. Probably don't need the extra pulling power and I don't know that the extra speed is that big of a deal either, but the slightly lower current draw seemed like an advantage. I do have an issue with the clutch lever so I have to reach under and not through the hole they put in the top of the bumper. I'm not convinced that I wouldn't have had the same problem with the 9000 model though. I haven't seen the two models side-by-side in person, but from the drawings (not real good ones though) it looked like only the motor is a bit bigger and that didn't give me any problems.

Just thought I would add: I just put an m8000 in my arb bumper on my 92 pickup. I had an xd9000i on my last jeep and it worked well. Since I am broke and the lil' yota is pretty light I figured I could get away with the m8. After I ordered it I was afraid that I might be disappointed with it. Last week my father called me to winch his incapacitated tractor (real fullsize farm tractor) onto his trailer so he could take it to the shop. When the tractor started up the ramp, I looked over and realized that I was pulling the tractor, the trailer, and his full size GMC like it was a golf cart (single line pull). After chocking all of the wheels on the truck & trailer, the tractor pulled right on. I must say that I was very impressed and now that I bought a snatchblock, I'm not worried at all.

one more thing, if memory serves me correctly, the m8 has a 4.8hp motor and the 9000 has a 4.6hp motor. Gives me the idea that the m8 may last longer if used alot.

What do you mean by a "new gen"?

IMHO, an 8000 lb winch is too small for single line pulls on a heavy 4Runner. OK for a single cab, marginal for an extended cab. Plan on double line pulls all the time - which is going to cut the line speed in half and get aggravating.

Go with a SuperWinch EP9.0 instead if you're really considering an M8K

The EP series has a much better clutch lever design, an external brake that won't melt synthetic line, a submersible Albright solenoid pack (best in the business) and a heavy duty 20,000 lb. snatchblock that's worth $100 bucks alone

It's also very comparable to the much more expensive Warn 9.5XP (they went head to head in Moab Jeeper's Winches in Hell article)

All for about the same price as an M8k (in fact, I think they're selling cheaper now)
