Usually is built into the bumper, which needs to be strong enough to support the tire carrier. There are places that offer spindles for use with swingout carriers. I used to run a single pivot/single latch tire carrier and it worked OK, but my new bumper with have a double pivot and double latch carrier:

I've got a rear bumper/tire carrier...it is a Badland one, so I don't know that I'd look at buying one right now considering all the trouble I'm having to get my front one fixed.

It looks basically like the AP rear tube bumper w/ the tire carrier attached on either side with big pins, so it will swing to either side, which I like.

I had been thinking about using a pre-existing swingout to add on to a bumper that will be made for my truck....to keep cost down.

I have been looking at warn's swingout for the Jeep XJ, it is sold seperately from thier bumper. Can be found at www.rubiconexpress.com

GOOD FIND PINNACLE. I like that setup...simple and solid. not too bad of a price for a rear bumper with tire carrier either.

I've seen an all-pro modded w/ a spare tire carrier. Turned out very, very nice. Can't remember the guys name, but he has a Maroon 85 Reg cab (may be buggy by now) wtih a 4.3 TBI, R151, Ultimate, etc. Last saw it at the 99 BHCC. Did a nice job.
