Should I get the ARB?

So I have the chance to buy an 8 inch third with 5.29 and an ARB from a friend for $400. He bought the axles used and says its geared too low for him. (Hes putting them on a samurai). The only problem is that he dosnt know much about gears and has no idea what condition they are in and has no way of sending me any pictures
Do you guys think its worth it to buy it?

I would advise you to give me his contact info as this is a terrible deal and I must speak with him about it...

Yes buy the damn thing. It's probably fine, and if the gears are damaged, if you can verify the locker itself still is functioning correctly it's still a steal.

Quality gears from a reputable company are usually 175+.

Thats what I was thinking.
But then I figured it the gears are shot thats $140 plus $100 for the install kit and then another $150 to have them installed and i might be better off going with an elocker.
What do you think?

You also have to factor in $150 or more for an on board air system to lock it. I just picked up a newly set up 4.88 e-locker third member for $550 shipped to my door so you can definitely find good deals out there. If you know someone that can hook the thing up or do it yourself and the gears are good then that's a deal though!

I dont understand why your still here? Id be sending him that money asap. However if you dont wanna go through the hassel of checking out the gears or maybe trying to sell it for a lil more to someone else just go for the e locker because with it you wont need an air compressor which could be usefull for airing up after a good offroad adventure.. However.. if you dont go for it..pass that deal on to someone on here man..

can't comment on the gears-out of my league

The ARB is a steal alone. I did my best to push a semi outta my way this last snowstorm and my ARB's push bar did not even bend. I likely could not exert enough force with the slippery road conditions.

You can do a CO2 or nitrogen tank for OBA and lock it just fine, or use an AC compressor or even a cheap electric compressor and an air tank.

It's pretty easy to tell if the gears are good if the third is already out, as long as there's no chunking and not a bunch of slop in them they should be fine.
