Good evening, I have searched a bit to see where those of us who posses compressors are mounting them. In my pickup it was in the bed out of the way, as far as my 4runner goes ,,, under th hood from what I can imagine is out way to wet in my engine bay. I was thinking the compartment in the back of the cargo area in my 02 runner. Other ideas? please any logical ideas would be appriciated.

i have the extremeoutback, and i dont have it mounted YET, but i was thinking about the same place, i did a quick look/measuring, i dont think mine will fit, but im going to look into a little better when i got time,
i think its a great idea and location, out of the way, stays dry, etc. hopefully some one else will reply with more wisdom then me, lol

i just set mine aside.....so I can move it around if i rearrange my gear.

I had to relocate the cruise control acuator, but that was easy.

It works well... it gets wet, but it's sealed well and has never given me a problem.

That was exactly where I thought it might go,,, well the only place it would fit without a major pain in the ass...

Side Note:

As far as the cool cargo hold in the rear that might also be an option , I know the ex outback compressor is a bit thicker than the viair so it might not fit. But you could always trim out the cover plate almost like a super charger coming through the hood but in this case it would be a air compressor through your cargo wall.

Before I built my rear cargo box where mine is located now I had it mounted on top of the rear wheel well. It was protected from the elements, out of the way, and could keep cool.

Be careful with it there... The compressor (any compressor) gets VERY hot after about 10-15 minutes of use. If you don't provide airflow, or worse - if something is touching the cylinder head - then you're looking at shortened motor life, potential siezing of the piston, and a very possible fire hazzard.

Thats very true I have burnt myself a few times with that som bich I will consider that I could always make a cover for it like wax impregnated canvaa with a cinch cord at the bottom to keep it dust free and water protected when Im not using it.

They do get hot. I bought an amp cooling fan that circulates air over it to keep it cool. They cost less than $10 and are are an easy way to protect your compressor.

Water won't hurt it at all, i've had a couple 450's mounted in the back of my other truck (air ride suspension) for nearly 2 years and most of that is daily driven without a bed cover.

That isn't a bad idea either I bet I could get a sweet deal at my local electric surplus store.

OK mounted the viair and had no problems but actually to my surprise a bit of an easy time. moved the abs relay thing and cut the top mount bracket then removed the bottom piece of the relay box and drilled a small hole so the old lower bracket sat on top off its old lower location, then found that the hole pattern on the viair lined up perfectly with toyota's side pattern so I just bolted it up then noticed it was touching the MAF sensor so I redrilled a hole on the mounting plate and bolted it there....

you need to put some type of cushion between the compressor and the body panel .. otherwise the vibration will drive you nuts

Yeah, but then it wont be as snug against the mounting surface and have more chace of moving, but to each his own in the event it does drive me nuts I'll find some sort of dampening material.
