As the title says I got some of the stuff sitting in my garage finally in my truck where it belongs. Pulled the stock 4.10 open third member and put in the 4.88 w/ lockrite overall took me about 4 hrs b/c of a few issues with the brakes. Other than that it was a lot easier than I would have imagined. The truck drives so easy with the 4.88s and 31 inch tires. Around corners I don't really notice to much difference except the racheting sound of the lockrite. Took the truck on the dirt to see if both wheels where locking up and sure enough when I popped the clutch the tail end of the truck was coming out, it was sweet!

Rocklobster---no pics? Did you have any probs setting the bearing adjusters....getting the backlash just right and getting the just right carrier bearing tension? How'd you do that? I'm mainly curious.

I just installed an aussie locker a few weeks ago. Just wait till you take it off road, insane how much lockers help. Nice job on the install!

well it was an already assembled 3rd member out of a different truck, so as far as i know it was already previously done lol i hope All I did was pulled the axles shafts and then pulled the stock 3rd member out and put in the other 3rd in that already had the gears and locker in it....
As far as I know everything works great, no whining, no griding, no clunking, etc..

since you seem to be the gear install guru, when installing a 3rd that has already been setup there isnt really to much to mess up correct? B/c I am a total newbie when it comes to doing anything besides changing my oil so I was pretty pumped that I managed to change it out and drive the truck when finished!

Good to hear it went well. I am going install a lockrite rear locker in the next couple of weeks. Am looking into re-gearing from stock 4.10 to 4.88s...

lol actually i dont have 4.88s up front yet, but dont worry. Im not going to put it into 4wd until the front differential assembly sitting on the garage floor with 4.88s and another lockrite is IN my truck. Until then, the truck is pretty fun to drive around town and in the gravel parking lots

You're right....not much to mess up. As you realize, it just takes alot of time to swap 3rds.....there is one thing you could have done but very few people ever do it and that is to tighten up the those carrier bearing adjusters an equal amount on each side. That has the effect of making your ring and pinion take lots more stress before they break. If the Yota 8" 3rd is set up tight and right.....then the axle itself will be the weak link. This goes for 488/529/571.
TRY CHECKING THE CARRIER BEARING PRE-LOAD WITH THE FRONT ONE. Dam cap locks messed up!. ZUK

cancel checking the front....you have that new IFS with the funky high pinion bolt together 3rd.

What would the tell tale sign of needing to tighten up the carrier bearing adjusters? While driving what would I notice if they needed adjustment? And I am unsure of what the "funky high pinion bolt together ifs 3rd" is? I dont really have a "3rd" I have a whole front differential that I just bolt up and then bolt the cv shafts to...yup, im a newbie lol.

I can tell if the bearings are not tight enough by using the "1 finger test"....basically, place finger on ring gear and "doggie waggle" finger back and forth....if you see/hear the ring moving back and forth thru the backlash range then the bearings could be "freshened up". confused?....so am I.

ya alittle Can you notice anything while driving the truck after it has been installed? I have noticed a change that might be just b/c I have never drove a vehicle with a locker but when I start off there seems to be a small amount of play that sometimes I also notice when I shift from 1st to 2nd. But the more I think about it it seems like it is the driveshaft. The reason I say that is that when I am under the truck I can turn the drive shaft a small amount while the truck is in gear.
