Came across a site advertising a 6000 lb 12V winch at $114 new.
Brand name is Grip. Seems like a good deal, but I wonder if anyone
used those or has some idea as to whether it may be a good
option for recovery?
Would be great to hear an opinion of someone with experience,
as I am very new to off-roading.

I rather spend the money on a good Warn winch. You get what you pay for and cheaping out on recovery gear is stupid.

I personally would not buy a winch from anyone of these several fly by night winch companies popping up lately. They are all lower quality made in china winches.

not enough winch. the specs say its 6000lbs rolling load or 2000lbs straight load. if you are using it for recovery of any kind 2000lbs is not enough

if you want a budget winch go with one from harbor freight or sam's club. otherwise step up to a better one

And yes, it says 6000lb rolling and 2000lb straight lift.
So then, if I understand correctly, it is the straight lift rating that one has to be concerned with when choosing a winch for recovery?

Forgive me if it is a stupid question, but I am as I said new to this -
is it possible to use a manual winch for vehicle recovery?

That winch would be good for pulling your ATV onto a trailer. That's about it. If you were stuck, hopefuly you would burn it up before the cable snaps.

from what i have been told and it makes sense to me is you want your winch to be rated(dead pull) twice what you will be pulling (your rigs loaded wheight)because most of the time you are stuck in mud or being pulled agianst a rock

and with the hand crank i think it would probably almost never use it because it will be more of a pita to use than anything

min. winch to get imo is a 9000lbs single line pull.
Everything else is crap.

Unless it's a Warn 8274. I've seen them do amazing things and the line speed is unmatched.

Edit: That winch is good for loading a boat on a trailer that's about it,save your $$$.

Well, it seems unanimous - warn or ramsey are the way to go.
So I am starting to shop for one then!
