i have a 76 fj40 cuiser on 31s right now...a brand new 2f engine and and brand new ome 3 inch suspension lift with new shocks and springs...i want 35s on it but i don't think i can fit them...i was thinking about putting larger shackles to get a little more lirft. i don't want to buy a new lift all togather and want to avoid cutting b/c no rust and great condition i want to keep it that way...i don't really off road serously but i do on occasion but besdies that its a daily driver garauge kept...dad got it for me last year when i got my liscence and i want to keep it nice...so basicaly can i shackle upgrade of a few inches get the job done with the current 3 inch ome suspension and fit 35s?

I haven't done any real research into FJ40s in a while, so my memory is a little rusty in the area. But if I recall correctly, you can fit 35s with a 3-4" suspension lift, though it will require some trimming in the back. Or you can do a spring over conversion and clear 35s with no problems.

thats the problem i don't want to cut any of the fender...honestly b/c i have never done it b4 so i am trying to avoid that

If you haven't found these guys, give the folks over at 4x4 Connection a call for parts and/or service with your LC. They are located in Winchester, VA (about 45 minutes from Dulles Airport) and were formerly known as Land Cruiser Connection. They've worked on my 4Runner and do very good work. They also have a good online/mail order parts business too.

I'll have to check my Toyota Trails magazines, IIRC I've seen numerous FJ40s on 35s and bigger tires.

yea they were the company that put in my new 2f engine when the cam shaft locked up...he was not a fan of 35's but i want them...i think i can fit them i hav 31's and they have ample room...at least 6 inches on all sides so i measured and added about a 3 inch diameter around the tire and it looks like it still has room so i dont know b/c people tell me i need a 4 inch lift to fit them and i have a 3 inch old man emu and it lifted the truck more the 3 inches so i don't know

Well, here's the scoop. I can fit 33's from my 4runner on my FJ40 with no lift, but wouldn't dare flex the suspension. To my knowledge, 3-4" of lift will allow you to fit 35's. Check out IH8mud.com to be sure, but there are alot of guys running 35's with 3 inches of lift. If you don't "need" 35's, save yourself the money and just stick with 33's, especially if you're not regearing and want to keep it more driveable on the street.

35s will fit with a little more lift, as long as you dont offroad it. I would suggest adding a shackle reversle to the front and extended shackles in the rear. That would give you a couple of inches and better handling (you'll want it with 35s).

One of my neighbors has 35" under his uncut cruiser, but he has 4" lift springs. It will be a dog with the 2F if you don't regear. He has a 350 in his. He changed from a 305 cause it didn't have power to to the 35's.

i have seen a few cruisers in colorado with 35s. a "working" (as opposed to a street queen, in which case you may as well have bought a jeep ) fj with 35s looked to me like it requires more modifications than youre willing to do. if you want to keep this cruiser nice, stick with the parts it was meant to run.

also, you might want to check out rockymountaincruisers.com, they restore cruisers and you might get a few ideas for yours.

I have an FJ40 on 35s and it runs great! I'm still trying to figure out how to post a pic, so please be patient.
About my rig: 1969 FJ40 5" lift, 5spd (just installed and awesome), engine is a Frankenstein (74 head and 73 block), no extras, yet!

I think you need to seriously evaluate the 35's.

Are you going to re-gear?
Will you use it off-road?
Are you ready to deal with the other problems with big tires and the lift?
(e.g. driveline lengths, increased wear of parts, etc, etc.)


I would go with the 33's.
33's are still a great tire. Especially if the truck is in that good of condition, there is no need to put the extra stress and wear.
