Question to trailer hitch or not that is the ???!!

Good morning, I have a question about trailer hitches. My toy is an 88 v6 auto and would never be used to tow any thing really heavy. I have a 5x6 flat bed trailer that I use for hauling my dads 4 wheeler and other various crap, and currently have a cheap bumper mount receiver hitch, one of the ones that are like $40 at Wally world that basically bolt to the bumper under where the stock ball mount hole is. My question is should I go ahead and install a real class 3 trailer hitch? I would like to get a solid rear bumper with one built in but have not had much luck finding any for a 2nd gen pickup. The reason that I am asking is my friend got rear ended in his heap yesterday and the trailer hitch saved the rear end of his rig.. and the way he wheels the thing it has acted as a rear slider more than once! I am on the list for a new fiberglass bed and want as much protection for it as I can get! Thanks a million Matt and if any one can point me in the direction of some decently priced rear bumpers and or sliders for my 88 I would GREATLY appreciate it. I would also like to look into a solid front bumper since mine is totally bent on the drivers side, I smacked a freaking drunk guy on his bicycle a few years back, there is still a freaking face print in my hood

Talking hah, if you could have seen that one!

If I could figure out how to post pictures I would love to share that one! He pulled out across a side walk and I was coming down a hill at about 30mph and WHAM, he cut out in front of me! His sun glasses were stuck in my windshield wiper, his front wheel was bent and wedged under my front bumper, it mashed my front under bumper valance panel back in and broke out my turn signal. I hit him head on, he flipped forward and did a sweet face plant into the hood! I dove out of the truck and was freaking out, he was bleeding every where, he stood up and I said dude are you OK you just got hit by a truck, I handed him his sunglasses and all he could say was thank you sir your a fine person, over and over! It turned out he was the local town drunk and had just left the little pub down by the train station and was heading home! There really is a nice face print in my hood though, right on the driver’s side on the rib that runs down it, and the valance is still creased from where I had to pull it back out! What a day that was
