You shouldn't have to step on the emergency brake at all
Just be sure to come to a complete stop (may not hurt to wait a second after that) then put it in 4lo. then you should be able to go
I would amagine that when it was beeping before you were not accytually in low, did you try to move to see if you where in low.
I havaen't had any problems putting it in low, but I've rushed taking it out of low a few times to get the beeping, Just had to stop be sure I was completely stopped, then go back to high.
Really miss the 4wd lever like in my Wrangler, always know exactly where it is, If you mess up you get other noises that let you know

OK well there definitely is a procedure to put it in low. Here's what I do
1. Come to a complete stop (Keeping foot on the brake the whole time)
2. Put it in Neutral
3. Turn to 4Lo
4. put into drive and go.
No beeping and everything is ok.

What about when you go from 4Lo back to 4Hi? Does it beep constantly. One time I could not get it to go back into 4Hi, it would have been a SLOW drive back to civilazation using 4Lo only! Finally, it clicked back into 4Hi. My only complaint about the '03, I miss the lever, like on my '02 Sport. I never have liked electronic transfer case shifting!!

I havent had that problem but I believe if, for some reason, it doesn't immedietly go back to 4Hi, you back up a little and then try again.
There is a section in the manual about it- it's pretty easy instructions.

Yea i've had troubles gettin it back to high before, but it's usualy becasue I was doing things to fast, and didn't come to a complete stop.
But if you make sure you come to a complete stop, and hold the brakes, then shift to nuetral, then 4hi, and drive off, it should work. Atleast the beeping is there as a good warning that something is wrong, although you would noitice the difference of not being in high very quick

Did all the tricks, backed up ten feet, stoped, neutral, drive, stop, neutral, backup....kinda concerned me for awhile. I was about 28 miles to the nearest Toy dealer and about 5 miles from the nearest paved road. Every time it switches back to 4Hi, but not after some coercing. It would be a bummer to be in an instant position and need either 4Hi or Lo witout going through all the ballerina steps. I'll have it checked by the dealer when I take it in for rountine warranty stuff. No other problem to take it in for though... Great vehicle! The constant beeping is torture though.

to get into 4lo (from 4hi):
1 > stop
2 > put it in neutral
3 > make sure you're not moving and then switch lever to 4lo.
4 > wait 1-2 sec and listen (should hear the gears)
5 > you now should be in 4lo.
6 > if not try steps 1-5 again.
to get out of 4lo:
1 > stop
2 > put it in neutral
3 > make sure you're not moving and then switch lever to 4hi.
4 > wait 1-2 sec and listen for gears (should be a clicking sound)
5 > now you should be out of 4lo (4hi, or 2hi)
6 > if not, try try moving in reverse for 5-10 feet and try steps 1-5 again.
notes: make sure your vsc is not disabled when switching in and out of 4lo.
good luck

Hey guys is the switch really that bad? I like it and it's really reliable.
I like it better than the manual shift on my old Nissan I used to have. That seemed like more work than the switch.
I think it's more about being unfamiliar with the switch rather than the manual being better. It takes more steps to switch in/out of 4WD manually and the switch is really easy so... I kind of like the switch better.
Having the 4WD lever down there does make the truck look tougher though

I think they have the lever because they are still carryovers from the old design. The LC hasn't been redesigned in many years- just updated or minimal changes.
I'm sure the new LC will have a dial like the 4Runner.

I would say that the lever in my own mind is a more reliable shift, then the turn knob or a push button. i have seen the turn knobs, and the push button fail and you can not shift in to 4 wheel drive and alot of those systems i have seen, have been pretty stupid however none on a toyota. i remember a couple of stories: 1 was in a ford ranger we were off the road in 2 wheel and we got stuck in some sand so we went to put it in 4 wheel and not thing happend. well none the less we were stuck after all that we found out that the button did not malfunction but the light bulb had burned out so it could not complete the circuit to shift into 4 wheel. in the new ford trucks that use that knob those break all the time listening to friends that own them. in the new fullsize chevy 1500 there push buttons fail also just as eaisly. i would say that the manual shift lever however more work it is, i think it is worth it to know you can make sure that it will go in to 4 wheel when u need it to.
just my own opinion

Yeah, I guess you're right on that note. Something could always go wrong with an electronic interface.
I have to admit I like a handbrake rather than the foot brake- but I have to imagine the center console with a 4wd lever, tranny shifter and handbrake wouldn't leave much room for anything else.
Oh well, I'm hopeful the Toyota unit is more reliable that the Ford. I'm guessing that's a safe bet
