Tacoma Lag
Howdy all!
Well I just bought a new (to me) '99 Tacoma and decided to keep my 4Runner as my play toy. In any case, I feel I got a good deal on it, with low mileage and price and all, but like all used cars, it needs a few things. The seller said it had a recent tune up and an oxygen sensor recently replaced, however when you take off, there's seems to be a response issue, then the truck shoots out, so the take offs are pretty jerky. I immediately went to the fuel filter, since the seller said that's the only thing he didn't replace in the last tune up, yet it still does it. The check engine light will periodically come on, but then turn off. So any clue as to what it could be? I would assume it just needs a tune up, but if the seller claims to have just done one, what else could it be? Thanks a ton guys!

Congrats on the new yota. Not much technical advice for ya though. I used to have a dodge that acted exactly like that, turned out to be an O2 sensor. I would check it even though the PO said he replaced it.
Nice to see another Houston local on the board. Hit me up if you're going wheelin' one weekend. What side are you on?

Fuel filter NEVER EVER FIXES ANYTHING...LOL,had to rant.
Have the codes pulled(write them down..current and history)
4 or 6 cylinder?
Most common is ignition problems. for 4 or 6.
cleaned MAF lately?
Intake boot torn?
how do the plugs look?

After some investigating, all the plugs/wires look good, it is the 3.4 so I'm guessing I just need to clean the MAF. I also need to check the PCV valve is still working correctly, we'll see!

Let us know, cause my Montero sport is acting the same way, lots of hesitation when i give it gas then takes off quick, and since most Jap. engines are built in a similar fashion, it should give me an idea what is wrong with mine.
