I know this is 3 years old but can anybody share what the solution to their problem? I have a '97 Tacoma with 3.4l V6.
It has 260k miles and timing belt was last replaced at 188k.
Last week I noticed my truck missing and shaking until it got to normal operating temp, then it would run/idle smooth. I was driving on the freeway the other day and noticed my CEL flashing and then turning back off. It happened again this morning on the way to work. I could see the engine shaking and hear the difference in the engine as it was warming up.

Should I stop driving the truck? I looked for arcing between plug wires but didn't see any. I haven't replaced plugs or wires since I bought the truck. I bought it in June.
Also my CEL has been on because my charcoal canister is throwing a code. Could the canister be causing my truck to run to rich or lean and then causing the miss fire? I'm not noticing any gas smell from the engine bay by the canister.

I did go to Vegas a couple weeks ago and my truck sat for 3 days. When I started it, it blew out white smoke and ran like crap until it was warm.

I found some good info on Ih8mud too:

My 3.4 did that to me one day. I know the scary feeling you have at this point. First thing is check all electricity. Fuses, spark plugs, plug wires, battery, etc. Your truck may be reacting to something electrical not operating correctly.

Note: I changed spark plugs and it cleared my problem up. (make sure you get the duel arc or whatever they are called).

Plugged canisters don't cause much problems except the fact that it is a worthless piece of equipment in your engine bay.

You could have a clogged CAT. look for code P0420

There are many things that could be wrong but start with thoses and see what you find.

Good Luck

Update: Had my truck scanned for error codes on way home from work, No. 3 was miss-firing. Bought new plugs and wires from Toyota dealership and the truck runs good again.

No. 3 plug didn't look to bad but definitely different than the other 5. They looked fine compared to the haynes manual.
